What's so bad about Pate?

Just wondering what's in pate that makes it a forbidden food?

Is it all types of pate or just liver pate? Would a fishy pate be okay ie/ salmon?

Thanks
P

liver. which contains excessive vitamin B iirc.

It's just liver pate - fish pate would be fine.

It's vitamin A, and unless you eat it by buckets , you'll be fine. A lot of vitamin A has been suspected of causing damage to the foetus, but having a slice or two will be fine.

As well as the vitamin A it is also high risk for listeria I believe so my understanding is that no type of pate is recommended.

I think it says on the NHS guidelines that any form of pate (even fish or vegetarian) isn't recommended because it can harbour listeria, which can make you and the unborn baby sick (although very rare).

HotPinkGingham is right, it isn't the liver, it is the listeria risk.

If you make fresh fish pate at home and eat it immediately (such as mashing slamon or mackeral up with quark or a.n.other cheese), then it is fine, but the cooking and cooling involved in standard pate making puts it at quite a high risk for containing listeria and listeria does very nasty things to unborn babies.

That said, the risk is still lower than unwashed packet salad iirc.

Ah thanks peeps, am going for a meal and know that home made smoked salmon pate will be served. Might just give it a miss to be on the safe side!

Um. Vitamin B's are great - that's where folic acid come from.

Vitamin A is also a massive red herring, you'd need to eat a polar bear's liver. A slither of pate on your toast is not going to kill you or your baby - in fact, this scaremongering about Vitamin A means that women avoid it to the extent of it being a problem because actually the baby needs it after 20 weeks.
