I just had my fetal anomaly scan and there appeared to be a unilateral eulagenic (??) area to the right of the lung. It appears as a clear area. Any ideas what this might be ?

Going to have another scan at fetal medicine centre this pm?

Tillysmum, sorry that this has happened, I know nothing about it but I just wanted to wish you good luck for this afternoon. You must be worried sick. ((((((((((((((())))))))))))))))

Girly · 03/11/2003 12:27

Me too, Tillysmummy hope all goes well this afternoon. Good Luck

Tillysmummy · 03/11/2003 12:51

Thanks you both. Brings a tear to my eye just reading your messages. Must admit to being a bit of a blubbering wreck today. Hope I get more info this afternoon. And it's not bad news

Good luck this afternoon. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Have you tried looking it up on the internet?

princesspeahead · 03/11/2003 13:04

tillysmummy, no idea what this is but best of luck, I hope it is good news this afternoon. thinking of you...

Tillysmummy · 03/11/2003 13:15

Thanks Princesspeahead. Aloha, thanks also and yes I tried to look it up but not sure i've spelt it correctly and nothing there that's relevant. It was basically a clear area in the chest cavity /lung which the sonographer thought should have been dark.

god sorry ! Pc got a bit carried away or I did ! I think it's actually ectogenic opacity and it means partially formed organ

Could it be an echogenic focus? I was told ds had this and it meant something or other had reflected in the scan and they did not know what it was but was sometimes sign of Downs syndrome. I can imagine how upset you are. I had to wait a week for more detailed scan and they offered me amniocentesis. In the end I asked to see the consultant, by which time I had decided that there was no point in having an amnio because I would not want to take any action so late in the pregnancy. The consultant reassured me and said they had only mentioned it to me because they are a teaching hospital and most hospitals would not. He said that in my case the risk was probably less than the risk in amnio. Ds was perfectly normal and healthy. I really hope that this is a false alarm for you too. xxx

Tillysmummy wishing you all the best this afternoon. Good luck.

Hi Oop think it's echogenic opacity actually. Sounds like the same thing though basically it wasn't dark and should have been. Guess I will no more this afternoon after more detailed scan. They said that heart, kidneys, brain etc were all fine so it seems strange that nothing else would be wrong if it was a sign of Downs. Also my nuchal scan results were very good on the down's side. I just don't know what to think. I guess conjecture is the worst thing. Will just have to wait and see. I am seeing the consultant tomorrow anyway for another scan. And then according to midwife if after looking at today's more detailed results and after doing his own scan he still doesn't know i'll be referred to a london hospital. Can't remember which one they said. It's all a bit blurry. Apologies all if this im rambling...

Good luck, Tillysmummy. Sounds like what the call a "soft marker" for chromosone defects, but not very helpful, is it? As you say, when they only find one it's usually just an oddity, not a definitive diagnosis. My son had a single soft marker, led to extra scans, much stress. So much extra stress I only had one scan in my next pregnancy. I actually said, "I don't want to know about soft markers unless there are at least two of them".

I can honestly say I know in real life maybe a dozen people who had "scarey" scans, and almost nobody who had a baby with an actual problem. When it was an actual problem, the deformities were extremely obvious just from ultrasound alone.

Tillysmum, thinking very much of you. Can you take someone with you? It's SO hard to take in what is being said, and you need the emotional support. If it is Harris Birthright Centre, they will (maybe you have to ask?) give you a copy of the scan report with all the details written down. We went through this sort of thing, and I know the wait will be very hard until you get all the results. I don't think there's any way round that, just remember lots of MN-ers are holding your hand. Hugs

Hi ladies well had the scan at the fetal medicine centre and it has to be said they were millions better than the sonographer I saw earlier. Much clearer about everything. There is right lower lob cystic adenomatoid malformation (CAM) with no other obvious structural defects nor markers for chromosomal abnormality. Apparently it is a benign tumour or overdeveloped part of the lung. Has anyone heard or had experience of this ?
She said it was associated with a good prognosis, with 2/3rd of cases the lesion remaining stable in size, in 20% there is shrinkage and in 10% there is progression. We asked about whether or not it would impair the baby's life or health etc and she said no and said it wasn't a major abnormality / reason for termination etc. I guess we just need to research it more and understand what if any impact it will have on the baby's life. We are seeing the conusltant at the NHS hospital tomorrow and then back to the fetal medicine centre to see the professor so he can explain it on Wednesday. Thanks for all your good wishes. It just seems so unreal. With one perfectly healthy dd it never crossed my mind that this one would have problems.
