taking progesterone until 12 weeks - how do I stop? Overnight or gradually?

so I've got to 12 weeks, had a scan and am wondering how to stop taking the progesterone.

I understand that the placenta has now taken over, so I can I just stop overnight or do I need to stop gradually? I am so worried about doing something to affect the outcome.

Thanks!

I just stopped. It didn't affect the outcome :)

I also just stopped overnight - feels a bit odd to just suddenly stop but it was absolutely fine!

FlipFantasia · 05/11/2011 08:22

Congrats on getting to 12 weeks and having a good scan Smile

I also just stopped - felt v odd but it was fine! And I took it to 9 weeks only, as that's what my private clinic prescribed for.

buonasera · 05/11/2011 08:59

I'm stopping just now! The clinic nurse said to wean off by going to one a day for 4 days then one every other day for a couple of days but the consultant said stop straight away, it doesn't matter. I did one a day for the last 4 days but I think I might just drop to zero now as it seems to have made no difference.

From reading other forums I think the weaning thing might be for people who take it in the first couple of weeks and then stop.

BeattieBow · 05/11/2011 09:08

yes, my consultant (NHS) said 9 weeks, but the private clinic I got it from said 12. So I thought I wouldn't take the risk!

fed up with it now though, so will stop! (maybe alternate nights for a couple of nights!)

Yes I was told yo stop by consultant at 14 weeks. Just stopped, no alternate nights. I was worried but all seems well. Good luck x

With DS1 I was nervous so took it till about 18 weeks then stopped gradually. I was told it didn't matter if I took it longer. With DS2 I just stopped at about 16 weeks. If it makes you feel more in control, taper over a couple of weeks.

I gradually cut down - a bit by bit over a month after 12 weeks. I was on two suppositories a day, I went to 1.5 a day, then one and then half and eventually none.

I am not sure it made any difference or not, but it made me feel better to do it slowly so I didn't panic too much. As I can be prone to a bit of a panic....

Congratulations on your scan, BeattieBow, and thanks for posting this. I am 9 weeks, taking progresterone and have the same concern about stopping suddenly. Planning to ask my Dr about it tomorrow. I've also been a bit worried that taking it could mask a miscarriage. Great to know that it's worked for others though :)

BeattieBow · 06/11/2011 20:17

ooh twiglet let me know what your doc says! I worried about it too, and actually did have a mc at 6 weeks in July where I think the pregnancy was slightly prolonged by the progesterone. but it did end at

oops posted too soon.

I was going to say it did end at 6 weeks. I know how you feel twiglet, I am so relieved my 12 week scan is over. good luck!

Hullo and thanks for the good wishes. Just to say that my GP recommended cutting down to one a day for about a week, then either stop or reduce to 1 every 2 days. That said, the consultant didn't give any instructions either way. Glad that your 12 weeks have passed successfully. It certainly feels like a long time! I've decided to go for another early scan, just so I know what's going on in there. I do think that the progresterone has a calming effect though. During previous attempts I have been Ms Stoppy (as my partner would testify!)

Stroppy, even...
