Early scan - full bladder?

I'm going for an early (am 9 weeks) scan tomorrow as have had a small amount of bleeding. When I booked my 12 wk scan they said about drinking half a pint of water so my bladder is full. They didn't mention it this time and I was too dazed to ask. Do I assume I have to do the same?

I probably would. If you haven't got a full bladder they may make you sit and drink water. I drank too much at my 12 week scan and they made me go and 'let a little bit out'! No mean feat when you are bursting to go! Hope all goes well for you. Smile

Yes, but just start drinking about 20 minutes beforehand and don't go overboard. It can be very uncomfortable if you're left waiting.

they may just do a trans vaginal scan so you wont need a full bladder. When you arrive for the scan ask if you need to, take some water with you just in case. Are you going to an epu? Hope all goes well with your scan, i had about 3 with ds2.

When I had my early scans, (7 and 11 weeks) they were vaginal and I was told to empty my bladder and give a urine sample before hand. So im thinking it might depend on the type of scan you are having?

I hope it goes well with your scan, I had early bleeding too and Im now 19 weeks. Good luck :)

When i had early scans they did them abdominally, even at 6 weeks, they would have only got the probe out if they hadn't managed to see everything they needed abdominally. At 9 weeks that shouldn't be a problem.
I think the best thing to do is to drink a pint an hour before. If you need an empty bladder you can always go for a wee. If you needed a full bladder and you haven't got one then you might have to have an internal scan unnecessarily.

Good luck!

My scans at 6 8 9 and 11 weeks were all "internal" and needed an empty bladder.

So suggest you go with a full bladder and ask the sonographer whether to empty or not.

Wishing you lots of good luck!!

I've done the first two on an empty bladder and all was fine, if anything they forced me to go to the toilet to do the second part of the scan (kings hospital offers both to their patients). Especially the last time, when I told them that I had just gone and the lady said "let's just check" and scanned my bladder Shock

sharond101 · 31/10/2011 13:34

I had scan at 6, 8 and today at 10 weeks. They told me to go with full bladder and if necessary they would get me to empty my bladder and do an internal. First time they had to do that but at 8 and 10wks they could see everything fine with full bladder scanning abdomen.

When I've gone for early scans (lots!) they've always tried abdominally first, then if that's not given a decent picture they've sent me to pee and got the dildocam out.

Thanks for everyone's advice. I went with a full bladder, but had to wait so long and was so nervous that I had to go to the loo anyway. But they managed to find it anyway and crucially, found a heartbeat Grin

sillymillyb · 31/10/2011 17:48

Ah huge congratulations - am really happy for you :)

MiauMau · 31/10/2011 22:34

lovely! I love when they say "Don't get your hopes up, it might take awhile to find the baby" and he/she immediately pops on the screen/doppler. Who knew that such tiny things had already a sense of humour Smile

I had early scans at 5 7 and 9 weeks and ha to have an empty bladder as at thy rely they are internal scans and not running over the belly. I would call to find out if ur scan will be internal - it's thats the case I was told not to drink an hour before and had to make sure my bladder was totally empty. At 11 weeks I had another and had to drink loads as it was a normal on too of the belly scan x

justhayley · 31/10/2011 23:27

Oops uv already been and gone lol I'm glad everything is ok, the not knowing is horrible

RickGhastley · 01/11/2011 19:01
