Had a bit of a nightmare with a UTI resisting antibiotics so went into obs and gyns last night and they wanted to give me an early scan.

My hcg levels from bloods were 58000 so suggested about 7 weeks. I thought I was 7+1. But sonographer only reckons 6+2.

Here is the scan pic:

I literally can't make head nor tail! I'm a little worried that the length is only 5.4mm if I am at 7weeks. There are twins in the family but she couldn't tell. We could see a heartbeat though which was slightly reassuring.

i had an early scan with dd2 and it looked exactly like that. I was 6+1 (maybe+2, not 100%)

how sure are you about your dates?

mummythomastobe · 28/10/2011 21:57

They tend to be bang on. And it was a 'quiet month' so quite sure I conceived on or just after 21st Sept. x

The good news is that the scan shows a viable pregnancy with a heartbeat.

It's possible for sperm to live inside you for 5 days or so and if that's the case you could have conceived nearly a week later than you think which would explain the discrepancy. Allow for sonographer skill, machine standard and location of pregnancy/fullness of bladder etc and it's perfectly possible that you're out by a week.

HCG levels have a wide range of normal too.

Thanks :)

I was 100% sure on my dates (sex once that month) and that first scan agreed with my dates. When I had my dating scan at 10 weeks it was out by a week and so was my nuchal scan at 13 weeks.

The fact that you have had a scan showing is great. Hopefully your dates will fall back in line as your pg progresses.

When I had an early scan at 6+4 it was 5.6mm and they dated me at 6+1. I am 100% sure of my ovulation date.
When I had a second scan at 9 weeks exactly, it measured 9 weeks exactly. I think some of these scans at around 6 weeks often underestimate the gestation by a few days. By my 12 week scan I was a day ahead!

If you are like me, your 6+2 might be more like 6+5 and therefore not far behind your own date at tall.

As others have said, at 6 weeks the most important thing is to see a live embryo on the scan and for the gestational sac and yolk to be normal.

razzdazz · 29/10/2011 09:59

Agree with kat. They told me at my EPU that the machine usually measures small early on. I was dated exactly 6 weeks then two weeks later I was 8+5 so bang on what I though I should be. Congrats on seeing hb

mummythomastobe · 29/10/2011 11:36

Thanks! I can't really see a yolk sak on the scan picure but a hb must mean thinks are ok. The sonographer wasn't really a people person - so not the best for reassurances - she spent more time showing me that my bowels were full than on the baby!

I've 'lost' a week with both of my early scans, but it turned out to be the most accurate date I was given last time. The dating scan at 15 weeks agreed with my dates but DS didn't oblige!

As I understand it, if the heartbeat is there that's the main thing. It's nerve wracking, isn't it!

KatAndKit · 29/10/2011 19:31

They would have told you if there was no yolk sac. It is impossible to have a live embryo without one as far as I can understand. Because the scan is 2d, it might not be on the pic they printed for you. I have two from my first scan. One pic shows the yolk but the other does not.

A heartbeat is excellent news at this stage. Hope your next scan shows good progress. Have you got another early one booked?
