Bleeding and cramping first trimester

Hi, I found out on Saturday I am pregnant. This is my first baby so I a bit lost and overwhelmed. I had really sore breasts (as in "please do not touch") and I was feeling really drowsy.

Everything seemed fine until yesterday when I had some really nasty cramps and light bleeding. I went home early from work and tried to take it easy. Also called the maternity centre and they told me to visit the A&E in case it got really bad. This morning it felt like things were getting a bit better but now I bleeding more heavily (even though I don't have such strong cramps any more). It's brown - pinkish (apologies for TMI). I'm 4 weeks btw so I am guessing it is a bit too soon for a scan. Not sure what to do. I think I am panicking. Has anyone experienced any similar symptoms? I read it's generally normal to have some light bleeding during the first trimester but all my other symptoms are gone (no sore breasts and not feeling drowsy any more). Thanks for your help :)

Just posted on the other thread, but wanted to give you a bit of support.
The cramps can feel very strong, even early on. It is scary though.
If the bleeding goes bright red, and the pain get unbearable, then I would def head to the hospital.
I have had bleeding in both my miscarriages, and also with my DS who is running round like a loon right now! Smile
Try to stay positive, it's early days xxxx

hi snetter, many thanks for your message. I am trying but tbh I am going a bit crazy I think :) Can't concentrate at work and I'm constantly going to the bathroom to check what's going on.

The bleeding is not bright red, but it's starting to resemble period-style bleeding (last days). I guess I'll try to take it easy the next couple of days and see how it goes. There is only that much I can do. So happy for you and your DS :) Hopefully I'll be in the same situation soon!

I think it would be wise of you to get yourself to a and e. They will measure your hcg and again in a couple of days to see if it is doubling( good sign)- to indicate continuing pregnancy. If nothing else it will put your mind at ease. Bleeding in early pregnancy is not as rare as it seems. However, at this point it could go either way. Fingers crossed that its just a bit of breakthrough bleeding.Good luck. Try to take it easy and look after yourself hun x

Hi Ilaria, poor you. I'm 9 weeks tomorrow and at 5 weeks i had a bleed and very bad cramping. It was the shittiest couple of days of my life- i really feel for you.

All the advice i got seemed to be the same- 'sometimes this is normal, sometimes it is the start of a miscarriage', and this was what the gp said as well, (although did say to come straight back if things got worse.)

So everyone had a policy of 'wait and see' which i'm sure is the right suggestion medically but is pretty brutal when it is your baby and you don't know if it is going to be ok or not and those days were horribly, horribly long.

So sorry i can't say anything to help you but i'm with you in sprit x

Thanks so much for your messages. I probably will visit the A&E today. Having to wait is actually killing me atm but I guess there is nothing else I can do. Hopefully it will go away after a couple of days like it happened with you onlinefriend. This is just so annoying. I didn't even have time to go to my GP (have an appointment for Monday). :(

Have you done another pg test?
xx

Ilaira · 27/10/2011 01:26

I did do another pg test but hgc hormone could still be present even after 2 weeks after a m/c... so went to the E&A today, they are not sure what's happening. They think I haven't miscarried but they can't be sure. Kept me in for observation for 12 hours (managed to leave and return to sleep at home), fearing it's an ectopic pregnancy. :(
hgc is 441 and needs to go up before they can do a scan. Going back on Friday and possible Sunday for another blood test.

Hi Ilaira, just wanted to say hello today and thinking of you. Glad you didn't get bad news yesterday at A &E, fingers crossed for HGC level tomorrow. How are you feeling today?

sharond101 · 27/10/2011 16:01

Hi Ilaira. I had the exact same thing the day after I found out I was expecting so I was 4 weeks gone too. A brown stain on my underwear and a few days later a pinky smear when I wiped. I had cramping and back pain like I was about to take a period. We went straight to A&E as I miscarried last year and frankly I just panicked. I was told it can be very normal to belled at this stage and as long as it is not bright red not to worry too much. It was described to me as my body thinking it should be menstruating and so starting that process but the HCG levels getting in the way. I also wonder if it was implantation although I have read that can happen sooner than when you would have missed a period. For me, so far everythings turned out fine. They could not scan me until I was at least 6 weeks but at that scan we saw a heartbeat. I am now 10 weeks and still frantic with worry but know now the bleeding was nothing to be concerned about. There is no doubt about how anxious you will be feeling, it was the scariest time waiting for the scan but be reassured that it is very common.
