Hiya I'm 13 + 3 weeks, iv had my 12 week scan and was wondering what happens next? Do I need to book a midwife appointment any time soon?

Also how often do I need to see my midwife or doctor?
Or is this it until my 20 week scan?

Thanks Hayley xx

Hi,

I could be wrong as my youngest is nearly 3! 6wks pregnant with #3 :) on the front of my notes there was a 'schedule' telling me when apts should take place. I'm sure there's bloods between now and 21wks scan.

Oh and congratulations :)

the midwife should have told you, in your maternity notes it tells you when to go see your midwife and for what. your next appointment should be your 20 week scan

If you're UK based, you'll probably get a 16wk apt - usually with midwife, and you usually have to book it yourself (gives you the choice of times).
Have a look at this schedule. It may vary slightly in your area mind you, but it's a good guide.
This is a link to the whole NHS purple book in sections. If you're UK based, asked for one. It's got lots of useful info in it.
Some places do it through your doctor's surgery and some through hospital/nearest antenatal care. Combo here as we have a midwife led unit and they can always make the surgery times.
If not UK based, it's a good guide about the kind of things to expect anyway.
It doesn't matter where you live - ring the midwife/your doctor and ask if in doubt!

I definitely have an appointment at 16 weeks with the midwife, so I don't think your 20 week scan would be your next appointment. Just give the MW a call in the morning and they'll confirm.

Oeisha · 25/10/2011 21:25

*ask not 'asked'. Seriously, pg brain tonight [hhmm]

melliebobs · 25/10/2011 22:11

there should be a schedule at the front of your maternity notes. This is my first. I had my booking in appointment at 9 weeks and this was issued to me by the maternity unit. I then booked my scan myself for 11 weeks. At the front of my notes it then says appointments with midwife at wk 16, wk 24, wk 28 (can't remember the rest) but these appointments are at my GP surgery with the midwife affiliated to that surgery and I have to make these appointments myself through reception. It is different everywhere you go though

Oeisha · 25/10/2011 22:14

There's a schadule on my notes, but they don't always remember to write on it, though do usually remember to tell me...and then change the appointment as there aren't enough mws in the area...just remember to ask and book that moment/within minutes...pg brain defense mechanism.

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 25/10/2011 22:16

Have you had a booking in appt?

justhayley · 26/10/2011 20:12

Hi all, thanks for the replys, I think there was a schedule in my notes, but the midwife kept my notes at the booking appointment and said I could get them next time, is this unusual?
Was looking through one of my books which says I should have a 16 week check up, have got a few weeks left but will call the midwife tomorrow and see what's going on. Thank you xx

Er, you're supposed to have your notes with you at all times in case you have to go into an unfamiliar hospital. It's very unusual that your midwife kept your notes!

hubbahubster · 26/10/2011 20:39

Plus your notes have all your important phone numbers in them...

Mum2be79 · 27/10/2011 08:22

Book your appointments yourself - my friend didn't and missed her 16 week appointment. I too thought they would be automatically sent via post but apparently not in the East Yorks area.

I too am a first timer (30 weeks + 4). First timers get more appointments:

16 week
20 week (usually done at the scan appointment - mine was at York)
25 week
28 week
31 week
34 week
36 week
38 week
40 week
41 week

There are some differences depending on where you live but the number of appointments should be the same. Your MW will write in your notes that you keep BUT my hospital always has a copy of them anyways.

Will advise to always have your notes handy.

Oeisha · 27/10/2011 10:38

Ahhhhh! Almost forgot to book my 31wk apt...MW actually wrote this one down on my schedule thingy too!

Yes, def. get your notes back and keep them. The number of hysterical HCPs I've seen who've then insisted on a trip to hospital for pre-eclampsia checks alone makes me constantly carrying them a must.
