Nosebleeds

Hello all, I'm 20+4 and have had a relatively heavy nosebleed for the past 2 mornings. I can't think what might have triggered them and they stop within 10 mins, but it'a a bit alarming! I checked the NHS website and it says they're quite common in pregnancy (one of the joys!), but I've made an doctor's appointment to get my blood pressure checked at lunchtime just to be on the safe side (and docs is only 2 mins up the road).

Just wondered if anyone else had suffered from nosebleeds in pregnancy or spoken to their Doc or MW about them?

The only time I ever have nosebleeds is when I'm pregnant, and they come out of nowhere. It's left me horrified a couple of times to find I've had one in public and not known til I could taste the blood I don't think there's any reason to be concerned though, does your GP not have a machine that you can just test your blood pressure with yourself? Ours has one by reception, I don't think nosebleeds have any bearing on blood pressure.

Thanks Fuckity. I work at a university and am just popping into the medical centre as it's run by my surgery and it's small so i don't think they have a machine. I'll get them to check me out as have been feeling a bit light headed also. I'm sure it's fine and I'm making it worse y thinking about it! But docs is close and it means i can leave work early too, bonus on a friday!

I've been getting nosebleeds regularly (30wks) but my midwife says I have an "excellent" bp I think they can sometimes be related but it's quite common in pregnancy anyway so not always related iykwim

I'm 16 weeks and had my first nosebleed about two weeks ago, quite a surprise as I've never had one before, but it was very short and didn't alarm me overly. In the last week I've had one every day, but again, just short ones which stop easily.

I saw my MW on Tuesday and asked her about them, she checked my blood pressure which was fine and said that the nosebleeds were normal and nothing to worry about. Don't forget that we're carrying about an extra 2 and a half pints of blood around and that increased volume of blood puts extra strain on the delicate nasal membranes. As long as they aren't really heavy (i.e. making you headachy and dizzy), or lasting longer than 10 minutes don't let it concern you.

They don't warn you about the nosebleeds though do they? I had no idea until I had my first and checked online. There's nothing in any of my pregnancy books about it.

I haven't had any nosebleeds this time, but did get them last time pretty regularly. I think they say its due to increased blood flow in pregnancy.

Thanks all for your reassurance. I've seen the doc and my blood pressure is fine and she told me i was looking well and not anemic! After talking to her I think it might be the painting my OH has been doing irritating my nose. He's stopped now so hopefully they'll go away. Doc said if they don't go away over the weekend to go back and they can give me something to put in my nose to sooth the inflamation. Feel better now knowing my bp is fine though.
