Rough consultant

Hi - I'm 39 weeks today and had an appointment at the hospital for a growth scan and seeing the consultant afterwards (no idea if that is routine or why they brought the consultant in). Anyway - she checked the position of the baby's head and was really quite rough - put way more pressure on my lower pelvic area than the midwives do. Has anyone else experienced this? She was also talking about me in the third person 'she this, she that' to a student in the room instead of directly to me. She came across quite superior. Is this common???

I should add - I almost feel some bruising down there now

Thats not normal. I'd be annoyed and upset at that.
She must have been in a bad mood and not able to be professional and ended up taking out on you. maybe that student was pissing her off.

Id mention it to my GP.

Where was this? i had a rough consultant at Colchester hospital and complained. When pregnant with DD2 she appeared and i said i wanted someone else! i think she had forgotten what it is like to be examined down there

Hi, on my fourth pregnancy and had so many examinations you wouldn't believe either by doctors , consultants or midwives!!!

There not nice but omg at the weekend I had a stay in hospital (false pre term labour) and I had a horrible horrible consultant lady who made me yelp in pain!!! I had tears in my eyes!!! I said I didn't wan her near me again.

The poor woman next to me was getting induced and she had same consultant and she was crying and the consultant was very abrupt with her saying she needs to stop and even had the cheek to ask how old she was!!!

I personally found the men consultants I hardly felt a thing!!!

Hope u r ok, if u do come across her again I would refuse her.

nevercan - this was mid wales. Respect you refused the consultant 2nd time around. how did she/ they react??

xkatyx I agree men can be better - the male student was so gentle and nice and human in comparison! Sorry to hear a consultant made you yelp in pain - that's not nice! why are they so rough?

Will try to get the guts to stand my ground if I get her again...

I did a written complaint about a consultant when I was pregnant with number 1. She wanted to do an internal and I had BAD spd and she wrenched my legs apart so bad I couldnt walk to the car!!

I don't know why some are like that, but I think this is when most woman feel very fragile and there is no need for it.

Harrygracejessica, oh my goodness I have terrible spd and can imagine the how painful that was!!!

I can understand people having bad days etc but it's just not acceptable!

Sorry she was so rough with you, I think they sometimes forget they're examining actual people sometimes...

However, I think referring to you in third person is quite normal (although admittedly quite off-putting). There was a student present at my last examination, I think he might have even been under exam conditions. I lay on the bed and he had to give his mentor a "running commentry" about me. He started by looking at my belly and saying "The patient has a distended abdomen consistent with pregnancy..." - no shit sherlock!

IME they normally ask you if it's ok to discuss you in this way first but sounds as though her bedside manner was a bit lacking to say the least!

So sorry you're feeling bruised - that's not on at all.
