Blood after sex in first trimester

I'm new on here...... Am 6 weeks pregnant, although barely dare to mention it for fear of jinxing anything!
Anyway, just wondering if anyone can give any advice? My husband and I just had sex and when we'd finished we noticed a tiny clot of bright red blood. I don't have any cramps today, although did have cramps yesterday. I also hardly have any pregnancy symptoms - the only thing I was getting was slightly sore boobs, but that stopped over the weekend. Should I be worried?

You must be worried, and I feel for you - try not to. Nothing very useful to add though. Do you have a number you can call? My local hospital had an early pregnancy unit, and they would always see you asap if there was any sign of bleeding. I think often it is nothing, but it is best to get it checked.

If it helps at all, I had a MASSIVE bleed at 19 weeks, and still went on to have a healthy baby girl.

Happened with dc 2 and 3. both times it was round about 14 to 16 weeks. I phoned my midwife who arranged for me to be seen at early pregnancy team at hospital both times. I think you should def go for this just to be on safe side as I found out about my group b strep at this time? Plus if you are rhesus neg you need to have anti d if there has been any bleeding. Both babies were well and happy and it put our minds at ease. That is what hospitals are for - don't worry about bothering them!

I was bleeding from 6 weeks to 10 weeks, was advised by the midwife not to have sex. Must be hard but just try not to have sex for a few weeks.and get it checked out. Btw I'm now 13 weeks with no bleeding and everything fine so dnt lose hope x

Thanks for your advice. I haven't had a midwife appointment or anything yet and my GP surgery doesn't seem to want to know about me until I'm at least 8 weeks, so I'm not sure who I'd go to really. Also, really don't want to waste their time and seem like an anxious twit! If I did another pregnancy test now, would it show up as negative if I'd lost the baby, or would there still be hormones in my system? I haven't had any more bleeding by the way, but still have a complete absence of any pregnancy signs!

I would bypass your gp and contact the local maternity unit as soon as you can. They really should be taking you seriously, and it makes me angry to think you are getting the brush-off.

I think pregnancy tests can be a bit unreliable in these circumstances, so I'm not sure about the benefits of doing a home one.

Please make them listen and get checked, you are absolutely not wasting their time - by dismissing your concerns they are letting you down and wasting yours.

Also, don't put too much importance on pregnancy symptoms. All pregnancies are different, and these things can come and go very unpredictably. Lack of symptoms doesn't necessarily indicate anything is wrong.

Just to add that bleeding after sex in the beginning is very common - I think the cervix is a bit more sensitive or something, so any kind of pressure on it can cause a little bit of blood - happened to me on more than one occasion.

The best thing is to go an early pregnancy unit. They should do a blood test to test hcg levels I think and will repeat the test in a few days to check hcg levels are rising. At 6 weeks it is sometimes too early to see a heartbeat on a scan but they may also do this. You could either go today or wait and see what happens, ie, if the bleed continues. But as it is so early you may not get an immediate answer. I wouldn't bother with a preg test as even in miscarriage they will show a positive for some time. Hope all is ok.
