38 wks and need a scan

Hi

Went for an antenatal appointment today, I am 37+4 I think and the midwife commented that my growth chart shows my growth has been slightly up and down between just below the upper line and just above the upper line. She has refered me for a scan just to check the baby's growth. I was kind of expecting this as another midwife had mentioned this to me the very first time I got measured as I was on the top line. I'm not particularly worried as my GP pointed out this way of measuring is not an exact science but I just wondered what it is that they are worried about. Is it just that the baby could be big? Just a bit concerned as the baby could come before the scan is due and my mind is running away with me. I'm booked into a midwife led unit 40 mins away from the hospital and I don't want to be at any unnecessary risk!

Anyone got any ideas why these late scans are done please?

I really don't know what they could be worried about. And I don't know why it would be a concern at this late stage, unless you are measuring at, I don't know, 44 instead of 38? Maybe they are concerned the baby is already a 10lber and might want to induce you?

Probably just interested if you're having a giant baby. I was offered one with 2nd baby (since first was big).

they may want to check its all baby and your not carrying too much water, are you diabetic? is this first baby? or second? if second how much did first baby weigh?
was your 20 weeks scan your last scan or have you had others since?

This is my second baby, first was 8lb 5oz. I'm not diabetic either but it probably is just to check the size. I don't want a massive baby but I would like it to come ASAP I'm knackered and mighty uncomfy. Ahh the joys of late pregnancy :)

I had a growth scan at 37+5 as DS suddenly started started measuring a bit big. The scan was quite straightforward. They checked that everything looked okay (it did, but they said his chest looked slightly large), and they also used the scan to get an idea of his weight.

I was told that as there seemed to be a bit of a jump in my measurements, I needed to be tested for gestational diabetes. I was told that it would be unusual to develop it at such a late stage, but that it wasn't unheard of. It didn't seem like there was much to worry about though, especially as I was so far along.

The blood tests never happened though as DS was born at 38 weeks exactly. He was 9lbs 1oz, so I'm glad he was early :)

Oh, and his chest looked perfectly normal to me!
