Baby not growing properly - anyone else had this?

Had a second growth scan today (am 36+3) and it showed that the baby is head down (hooray!) and the head circumference is spot on, but the abdominal circumference growth is tailing off.

I have another growth scan on 30th December, when they'll decide whether to induce me early or not.

I have gestational diabetes, so I've been being really careful about what I eat (and I know not to just go and eat sweets to make the baby grow!), and the doctor said I should take it easy over the next couple of weeks (hah - have 20mo DS who was up till 2.30am throwing up and feverish last night - an MMR reaction, I think).

Just want to go and lie in bed for a fortnight, eating chocolate. Can't though

Is this something to worry about ??

Frizbethebumpedupreindeer · 20/12/2005 16:03

One for mears I think, but I do know that birth between 37-42 weeks is classed as term, so sounds like they're thinking of booting you off at 37 weeks just in case, as with GD you can't be too careful. Hope all goes well for you {{Hugs}}

I had dopler scans weekly from 35 weeks due to pre eclampsia. They were watching for the point at which baby stopped growing, that happened at 38 weeks so I was then induced.

ChunkerXmasCake · 20/12/2005 16:09

I think they were more concerned this time than last time, as the growth is tailing off (the growth curve's "drooping" for want of a better expression!) rather than levelling out or climbing.

But the blood flow through the cord was fine, so I was reassured by that.

Aw sweetheart, nearly there.

ChunkerXmasCake · 20/12/2005 16:13

I know. Feeling v emotional today - not helped by total lack of sleep last night (poor DS crying nooo, nooo, nooo because he didn't want to be sick ). Make me go to bed early tonight, please!

Well if I promise to stay away , will you ??

lilianna · 20/12/2005 16:20

hi ds1 is now 3yrs but he was slow growing. He stopped growing when i was 5months pg and then started growing at 7months pg. i was induced at 38weeks. at birth he was 5lbs 9 and a half oz.
I hope this makes you feel better.

lilianna · 20/12/2005 16:25

if they are really worried it is poss they might induce you within the next few weeks. Could it also be that you just dont have the room for the baby to continue growing? good luck and it wont be long till all your worries are put aside and you are happy holding your little darling and totally knackered from all those sleepless nights and smelling of baby sick and dirty nappies. Enjoy the rest of your pg and if they were really that worried they would of induced you by now.

ChunkerXmasCake · 20/12/2005 16:25

LOL LGJ! No, wouldn't deprive you

Lilianna, thank you. Yes, does make me feel better. I guess I'm just used to being big and having a big baby - DS was 8lb 10oz.

ChunkerXmasCake · 20/12/2005 16:27

No, there's room for the baby - posts crossed! As I say, DS was 8lb 10oz and there's no way this one will be anything like that, I don't think.

After his efforts last night, I smelt of toddler sick...so I guess baby sick will be an improvement?!!

I had IUGR in both my previous pregnancies. As long as the babies were still growing, even if the rate of growth was slowing down, the consultant wasn't too worried. It meant lots of scans and foetal heartrate monitoring (and early induction at 38 weeks) but everything was fine and I have 2 lovely dds now. Try to keep track of your baby's movements. That was the thing they kept telling me. If baby is wriggling around as normal, it's doing OK. If it seems quiet or movements stop, you should ring your midwife or consultant ASAP (but you would do that anyway in a routine pregnancy.)
I know this is a stupid thing to say given the time of year, but try to take as much care of yourself as you can. Get as much rest as you need and forget the housework (or get your dh to do it, it'll be good practice for when the baby arrives.)

Hi

My fist and third baby did this. Sam was a pre-eclampsia baby and was induced at about the stage you are at now (38 weeks in fact), weighing 5lbs 5 oz. He took a long time to catch up, but it was very directly related to obvious causes- PETS and a milk allergy.

Harry was different though- I gave up work in a panic at 32 weeks (got a right telling off for that!) as scan showed he was too small for dates, we knew the dates were right because of extra tests earlier on (suspected DS). Giving up work and resting did the trick, and he was born at 41+3 with no induction and weighing 7lbs 4oz, my biggest baby yet.

I'm sure the rest thing was the clincher with harry, however with two older boys like you it was difficult. Good luck

(Typically, DS2 was monitored weekly for signs of poor growth with very odd placental blood flow scan several times, and guess what? Grew perfectly all the way through!)

Very much liking hearing stories of being well-rested - thank you

Just realised I've lost half a stone in the last fortnight.

I had pre eclapside and load of scans, docs worried that ds was going to be too small. I spent two weeks in hospital and he was born by section (footling breach) at 38 weeks. He was a whopping 9 2!
