If my baby is a "whopper" should I be asking for early induction/ CS?

Ok Im being worried by another thread

I have had to keep having scans throughout this pregnancy.

At 34 weeks baby seemed to have suddenly made huge leap in growth,so much so I had do another GTT

Turns out no diabetes but at 35 week scan baby was off the pecentile charts and weighing 7lbs.

I was told she is a "whopper. People keep asking if Im having twins.

Now Im 37 weeks and worrying.If baby is really so huge should I be asking for induction or CS if it will cause problems to deleiver her (had awful first birth dont want that again!)

Well growth scans are notoriously inaccurate. Plus it's normal

babies to spurt in growth, that's mainly what happens when in the third trimester. Same happened to me.

What happened first time around?

I had a whopper, not predicted, two weeks overdue and induced- was not fun! I would seriously consider section if I were you

Try not too worry too much - scans are notoriously bad at predicting wt. As far as I remember your baby's head won't grow much in the last 3 weeks - is mostly just little body that puts on weight. Probably worth chatting to your midwife/consultant though about your last birth to talk through your fears

I agree that scans are notoriously unreliable. If there are any concerns then your MW or consultant is the best person to discuss it with.

As other posters have said, scans are quite inaccurate.

And big babies are not necessarily difficult to birth - DS was 9lb10 oz and no problems at all, infact my sister had more of an ordeal with her 7lb=er!

My midwife said that the baby gains about half a pound a week in the last few weeks, not sure how correct that is but assuming it is correct and your scan weight is accurate you may have a 9lb6oz baby? 2 consultants have told me they will only consider a section if baby is estimating 10lb or over or if the mother is very petite.

Yes your all right it is inaccurate as the sonographer said. Though my bump is huge!
Her tummy is way off the percentile charts.

I saw a consulant immediatly after the last scan and she didn't say much, just she could do a sweep at 39 weeks but that is offered as standard.

DC1 got stuck, ended up in theatre and in HDU. She was only 6lbs so now Im wondering if my body wont be able to cope with a "whopper". Surely the consulant would be worried though right if there should be a major concern?!

My bump was also huge with DS but I think it was mostly water - watch out for Niagara Falls when your waters break!

Thats a point Rick- they did say I have a huge amount of fluid.

Hope it doesnt break in public with everyone just staring at me...!

Make sure you hang out in M&S or Waitrose near your due date - I've heard you get some nice presents if your waters break there

May be an urban myth though!

My first was 7lb 6oz, my 2nd was 10lb 6oz had loads of people ask if my bump was twins as I was massive - lots of fluid and a huge placenta too.

The birth was fine, although they kept telling me I wasn't having a big baby so didn't have any clothes to fit her at the hospital with me

I was told 7lb max baby by scan 9lb by midwife- baby girl was 9.9lb dont worry my neice struggled to deliever a 4lb baby ended with section but saled through her 7.6 baby naturally :)

My smallest baby did me the most damage. MW told me with DS (DC3 9lb 1oz) that past a certain point they help push themselves out so the birth can be easier.

Obviously if baby is 11lb that won't help! :o

Your consultant may be able to reassure you, or at least put in your notes that if baby is looking large while you're in labour then a EMCS should be considered.

my biggest one (9.5lb) was my easiest birth out of 3 so it wont necessarily make the birth awful.. if the consultants were not too worried and suggesting having c section etc then you would probably be okay, but ask them again or talk to midwives if you are still not happy and reassured about it? if you have a lot of fluid atleast that partly explains a massive bump if you feel you seem huge..

DS was a "whopper" at 36w scan and was born at 42 weeks weighing 8lbs 1.5

My baby came it at 10 5. I was colossal. It was evident from our family history plus all the scans, measuring etc that he would be big.

I was induced on the orders of my consultant on my due date. No problems at all with the birth, but the registrar took some convincing to carry out the consultants orders.

My DS was estimated to already be 7lbs at 34 wks (I also remember my GP remarking that I had a "considerable amount of baby in there"!) and he turned out to be 10lb 14oz, delivered by EMCS.

No CS or sweep was ever offered beforehand - but tbh I'm not sure I would have taken it up if it were. My midwife was a lot more concerned than I was! I would go for a CS if the same happened now, but mainly as I wouldn't want to go through a first vaginal birth with such a big 'un. Everyone I know who's had more than one says they get easier each time.
