Does anyone know what this could be? Am 35 weeks pregnant and its worse if I slump forwards and don't sit perfectly upright. Area is also numb. When I turned over in bed last night, something twanged and it felt like something ripped inside. Really painfull stinging feeling. I end up taking off my bra by tea time as it makes it worse. Is there anything the docs can do!?

It could just be muscle pull but pain under your ribs is also a sign of dangerous pre-eclampsia so I would get yourself checked out. There's a list of symptoms here: www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Pre-eclampsia/Pages/Symptoms.aspx

Scheherezade · 19/09/2011 21:25

I get this. I found going up a bra back size (or two!), tightening bra straps so my boobs are hoisted up off my belly and sitting up straight helps.

Thanks AKMD. Dodnt realise this could be a sign of pre eclampsia. In my case, dont have ant other of those symptoms though and they checked my bp and urine 4 days ago and all fine.should I still get things checked?

You really have probably only pulled a muscle (or need to follow Scheherezade's tip Wink) but you know how you feel and if it is worrying you or if you feel unwell in any other way there is no harm in giving your MW a call. If she thinks you need to be checked over, she will call you in. If not, she will be able to reassure you and give you some useful tips for minimising the discomfort.

I had a terrible pain just like this for a few days. Felt just like a pulled muscle and after a few days, it was gone. Think it was just everything stretching!! Hope u feel better soon Smile

justabigdisco · 19/09/2011 21:52

how long have you had it, if it is numb aswell it might be a trapped nerve, or possibly shingles (some people get the pain before the rash appears)

MixedBerries · 19/09/2011 22:27

Rib flare? That's what the midwife told me. Said they can't do much. But lifting arms in the air or putting hands on your head can help a bit.

pamplemousserose · 19/09/2011 22:29

You need to get your bp tested asap

I'm 35 weeks too and baby has just got to the size where it can kick and wriggle about under my ribs. If you slump forwards this gives baby even less room so the pressure on your ribs will be greater, especially if your baby is active.

I also remember, when I was pregnant with DS, having a numb patch of skin at the top of my bump between the two rib sections, and the skin went a bit 'leathery' too. It took ages after he was born to regain feeling there.

Not sure about the 'twang' - haven't had that.

I find the best thing to do is to sit or lie in a position to keep your front as open as possible - maybe put a cushion in the small of your back, and google 'pregnancy yoga positions' for more tips on things you can do to make yourself more comfortable.

Obviously if you feel unwell or develop any other signs of PE, get yourself checked straight away.

I've had a similar pain under my ribs since about 18(ish) weeks (31 now) which as gotten progressively worse. It started as a tingly feeling in a small area, which as now gotten larger, but I'm now also getting pains. I just put it down to everything getting squished. I had no idea this coud be a symptom of pre-eclampsia which is worrying as I've had traces of Protein in my urine since very early on. Bp seems fine though and I don't have swollen ankles etc. Great, another thing for me too obsess worry about!!!

Have you been measured for new bras recently? I get rib pain if I wear ill-fitting bras - I do have mahoosive chebs tho Grin

lightsandshapes · 20/09/2011 12:00

I get this. Am desperate to rip my bra off by early evening.
Think its cos bra is too small - your rib cage expands during pregnancy. Mine didn't until at least 32 weeks though, so I'd been merrily wearing my 34 bra, then got measured and went up to 38! Have got a very high bump too.

Also find it more comfortable not to be wearing a bra than to be wearing a bra, which goes against what most books/people tell you.

Will go and google rib flare.

MissRee · 20/09/2011 14:03

If sitting on the sofa not doing much then braless is defo the way to go but if I'm doing housework or moving around, I need some kind of support otherwise they ache.

Strappy vest tops with built in support and supportive "sports" tops are my saviour at bed time!

Hils74 · 20/09/2011 15:51

Thank you! I was starting to wonder if I was the only one!

I'm 32+4 and had this for a few weeks now. I have a numb patch in the middle at the top of my bump, which actually hurts if I put any sort of pressure on it, including tops that tie at the front.

I find it much more comfy if I remove my bra as soon as I get home! Am currently wearing them on the loosest setting and that's with an extender strap!! :)

My BP is normal as is my urine so I doubt it is PE. Yoga does help...

I had something like this every single night towards the end of pregnancy. It was called Rib Flare. Very painful.
