Am feeling very fine now I have hit the 21 week mark in my pg

however I have two bugbears which are complicating my life

  1. I have a craving for Guinness! Esp the old fashioned stuff rather than the Draught. What on earth could I possibly drink that gives me that bitter but fizzy kick? Atm I am trying to make one small can last four days...
  2. Tights. I dont seem to fit into any maternity wear trousers (they fall down constantly and yanking them up is so not a good look) so I am mostly wearing dresses. But normal tights are too constricting round my bump. Where can I buy good opaque maternity tights (apart from mothercare £5 each and crap). Or should I move to stockings?

Hmmmmmmmmmm

Ooh, I want to know about tights too. Am freezing my feet off at the moment!

Chloe55 · 14/12/2005 16:14

I bought tights at H&M and they seem better than the Mothercare ones. Must admit though - have considered the stocking idea myself as I reckon they are probably more comfortable.

As for the guinness - eeewww!!! (sorry!)

guzzler · 14/12/2005 17:58

Know what you mean - hate maternity trousers why don't you try some low waisted jeans a couple of sizes too big with a belt - they just sit under your bump and are really comfy. My size 14 New Looks have lasted me all pregnancy and cheap as anything too....

Re Guinness - its great for iron so have the odd half pint.

starandsnowshaker · 14/12/2005 18:04

drink guiness shandys it will make it go longer and is really yummy

amanada · 14/12/2005 18:14

Have you tried the M&S ones? not terribly cheap but they were very relaxed around the bump, I did have to buy "large" though to keep leg circulation going - normally a 12/14 when not PG. Hippo size currently of course.
Can't help with the Guinness sadly...

snowleopard · 14/12/2005 18:17

Definitely m&s; I loved mine. The bit over the bump was lighter fabric in a square shape, which looked like a telly. V comfy though. I think the style was called "mama" or "mamma".

philippat · 14/12/2005 18:19

i reckon you're craving guinness because you need iron - so try chocolate...

walkinginawinterBundleland · 14/12/2005 18:20

i saw a 2 pack of maternity tights in h&m which were petrel blue and jadey green, fiver for the pair

Gem13 · 14/12/2005 19:01

My mother swears by Mackeson (sp?) shandy. She used to make me drink them when pregnant.

Don't do tights if I can help it so not any use on that front I'm afraid.

thecattleareALOHing · 14/12/2005 19:03

bitter lemon? sorry if that's a crap idea, but i hate beer.
hold-ups? (or fall-downs as they could also be called)

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 14/12/2005 19:05

You are allowed one bottle of Guinness if you want one, it won't do you any harm, especially at 21 weeks. Alcohol is definitely to be avoided during the first 3 months when the baby's nervous system is developing, but after this stage, if you have the odd drink it's absolutely fine! I used to have a pint of draught Guinness every now and then and ds is a big chubby healthy boy!

hoXMASchick · 14/12/2005 19:07

enid, i've got some black hennes maternity tights, still in the pack. they're large i think. do you want them?

chIRIStmasfairybigpants · 14/12/2005 19:27

I got sick of struggling to get tights up without twisting them all over the place so switched to stockings - much easier and thay keep everything nicely aired!!

Enideepmidwinter · 14/12/2005 20:04

so how do you get a suspender belt over your great big tummy?

hoxty yes would love them cat me and I'll send you my address. how much are they?

thecattleareALOHing · 14/12/2005 21:28

Enid - hold ups.

PrincessPlumPuddingHead · 14/12/2005 21:30

enid I'm in large ones from m&s (no control top obviously!) and they ahve been comfy until about a week ago. you are tall I think so may need to go for extra large, but they are fine...

can't help you with the guinness, bleuch

hoXMASchick · 14/12/2005 21:32

count them as an xmas present enid! will cat you now.

snowleopard · 14/12/2005 21:33

I liked alcohol-free lager while preggers. Don't think you can get Guinness but you might still get that beery taste you're looking for. It's not very nice but you do get used to it and sometimes nothing else would do...

Jasnem · 14/12/2005 21:34

I'd just drink the guiness and try not to worry too much.

Tights I don't do as I don't like things round my waist (or where I used to have a waist). I'm wearing knee length socks with dresses (from Peacocks) or dungarees - love 'em or hate 'em, but I love mine.

Have the guiness enid. It's christmas!

moondog · 14/12/2005 21:36

Oh have a pint of Guinness woman!
Won't do you any harm at all!!

(If it's bitterness you're after, what about a Campari and soda??)

walkinginawinterBundleland · 14/12/2005 21:36

deffo have the guinness. I nused to pour a slug of blackcurrant cordial in the glass first yum

Mercy · 14/12/2005 21:36

Out of date info: my mum was recommended a bottle of guinness a few times a week when pg with me (40+ years ago) As others have said, iron content and all that.

WHen I was pg with dd, I certainly upped my wine intake from 7 months on - from 1/2 to 1 bottle per week to 1 bottle per week (red wine). It won't do any harm.
