35 weeks and muscle spasms in my back. Help me, I'm truly going mad!!!

Since about midnight last night I've had pain about halfway up the right side of my spine (lumbar area I think). I'm sure it's nothing to do with labour and my baby is NOT imminently going to arrive, but it's driving me absolutely mad. They are spasms that come about every 30 seconds to 2 mins and are very brief but are really painful.

I took paracetamol earlier which dod precisely nothing. I've had a bath, which eased it a little bit. No position, sitting, lying, standing etc helps. I got about 1 hours sleep last night and expect I'll ge the same tonight unless I can do something, but....

What can I do?????

what about one of those heat pads or even a hot water bottle? failing that could a physio appt help????

I had that, really hurts... Hot water bottle really helps. You could try deep het but check it's ok for pregnancy with the pharmacist. It will probably go soon, mine lasted 2 weeks.

Had similar.

Heat pads fine.

Deep heat/ibuprofen gel not fine.

I do stretches to help my lower back/side pain.

I too have been really really struggling with this problem for the last two weeks. I have seen physio which helped a bit but I have needed painkilllers codine and diazapam - as you say paracetomol don't work!! Hot baths and heat pads ease it a little.
I really hope it clears up for you (and me) soon- and if you do find anything that helps please let me know

Oh gawd I can't cope with this for two weeks!!!!!!! I;m already sleep deproved through going to the loo every hour, this is going to turn me into a monster...

I've been waiting to see a physio for weeks for general back pain and sciatica and wasn't holding out much hope before I have the baby TBH. I've tried a hot water bottle, didn't do anything.
So I need to go to the GP tomorrow for painkillers then? Do you think I'll get codine and diazepam without any problems? It's the diazepam I need I think, I desparately need some kind of muscle relaxant.

Diazepam not recommended in the last trimester, bugger.

There's not much you are allowed to take when pregnant. Didnt mean to scare you. Might not last that long. Hang in there and get plenty of rest when you can. I saw a physio and she didnt help much. What about massage?

Firstly I got told to take paracetomal at which I burst into tears-in my defence I hadn't sleept at all for 2 nights and was in dreadful pain. G.P then gave my 30mg codiene tablets to take very sparingly.... 3 days later stillno sleep end of my tether phoned for a further appointment and was told to take 2x codiene x 4 times a day and to pick up diazepam to be taken 1 per night. I was confused and a little worried by this as first GP had said to take meds sparingly, uped the codine but left the diazepam. Paid to see physio privately as can't get appointment for another week with NHS. It did calm down for a few days but has been back with a vengence since Wednesday. Gave up today and saw emergancy doc and gave in to diazepam although I have only taken half of one.
I do hope you find some relief= this pain is allmost as bad as childbirth but without thr reward at the end.

I might contact a masseur (sp?) tomorrow to see if they can fit me in in the evening, and if it hasn't changed by tomorrow afternoon I'm going to the docs for meds. Hadak and Mango, how pg are you / were you when you had this?

I was 20 weeks but was told it was due to sudden growth spurt and shift in balance that my body was adjusting to.

I am 32 weeks now so about 30.... I am going to try and see private physio again tomorrow. I will let you know if it helps.

Try an oestopath instead of a massage I think

Update - I went to mat dept at 2am as the pain got too much so I called them to see if there was anything I could take and they said they wanted to check me over. They gave me co-codamol which has made it more bearable but it's still there. Have been in bed most of the day but am now going to see if I can find a local osteopath.

I really really don't like being pregnant!

I'm having a similar thing today, woke me up in the night last nightm, and couldn't get back to sleep for long at all from about 2am! So was miserable this morning. Been sat at work all day putting up with it, in agony! Paracetamol also no good to me, and I won't take anything else in pregnancy.

I'm going to try the hot water bottle trick when i get home! Fingers crossed!

OP, if you find a comfy position to sit/stand/lay in, please share with me as I cannot find one!

I find stretching one arm over my head helps a bit, plus lots of forever living heat lotion (like deep heat but ok in pg) a hot water bottle and dragging my self outside for a walk when it is really bad which seems to help. I'm 35 weeks but have been like this for about a month i think- can't really remember.

A month, bloody hell! Where do you buy the Living Heat from? It sounds very very good. I made the mistake today of thinking that it was starting to ease so I didn't take my meds when I was supposed to.........ooooooooooh it hurts now!

Hi Cat, Sorry to hear you had another bad night. I managed to see physio today which helped slightly. Have had to give in to meds as I can't manage pain, not sleeping or eating. I have taken to wearing those heat pads and spending the majority of my time in the bath!!
I would be interested in finding out more about the heat lotion- I haven't heard of it.
Please let me know how it goes with osteopath. I would have gone to osteo instead of physio however as I have got an NHS physio appointment coming up I thought it better to try physio first..

Hiya. Didn't go to an osteopath in the end. After a stern message left on the physio answer machine (i was referred 2 months ago as I've had back pain for months now) they called me back today and I've got an apt next tuesday. I couldn't tell from the website if the local ostoe was a specialist in pregnanacy so I spoke to a physio friend of mine who said a massage could only do some good. Then spoke to my pg massage massage woman who can't see me till the weekend as she's ill Sad.
I'm trying to not take the max dose of codiene but I'm struggling. Mind you, I'm struggling with the drugs too as they make me feel completely stoned! I've got a two year old aswell so I feel like a very bad mummy at the moment. He was at nursery today and will be tomorrow but is at home with me on Thursday so may need to get MIL over to give me a hand as I'll either be in lots of pain or drugged up.
