Finlay is very common round here!! Like Finn but not sure about Finlay -- think it sounds a bit weak... but Finn is all he-man...

ItllBeLonelymumThisChristmas · 14/12/2005 11:28

I have a Fin, but he isn't a Finlay. Go for it if you like it. I am not sure how common it is or how common you would want it to be.

MIstletAOU · 14/12/2005 11:29

I wouldn't say Olivia is common! (do you mean common as in a snobbish way, or common as in popular? It is quite popular I suppose)

I like Finlay, I would have liked it for my ds. You can spell it Findlay too.

GemgleBells · 14/12/2005 11:29

I think their all lovely names but it's really what you think that matters.

I don't think Olivia is common though.

foundintransleightion · 14/12/2005 11:29

'Fraid not. Don't like Fraser either.
Re. Olivia, don't think it's common at all - I actually have the opposite associations! (Or do you mean common as in loads of girls have it?) And I like it

OComeOliveFaithfOil · 14/12/2005 11:30

Don't like Finley or Fraser. Like Finn.

Don't like Olivia, I like Liv.

I am an old fogey when it comes to names though and like the good old classics so ignore me.

WigWamBam · 14/12/2005 11:31

Don't really like Finlay or Fraser much - sorry.

Olivia is fairly popular around here but I wouldn't have said it was all that common a name.

LOve the names Finn and Finlay and Olivia isn't common here at all...
My Dh works with a man with a very bright and funny 7 year old son called Finn and often comes home with the latest "Finnism".

hunkermunker · 14/12/2005 11:32

I like them. I especially like Fraser

At the dds school there are

10 Finlays
6 Gabriels
5 Kais
3 Finns

I would avoid those names for that reason. In the playground you hear a mum shout "Fin!" and every boy stops, thinking it is either them or their best mate.

finlay/finn was the other name i had on my list for ds! fab name!

nailpolish · 14/12/2005 11:36

i have a nephew called Finn and he really suits it. its a nice name for an adult too which is important

ItllBeLonelymumThisChristmas · 14/12/2005 11:39

Well my Fin is actually Finbar and I have never met any other child with that name, and I still find it hard to call him by his name in public as I am embarrassed by the almost guaranteed stares from strangers when they hear his name. I call him Fin in public and get away with fewer stares.

So Fin(n) may be common, and Finlay may be too, but Finbar definitely is not!

LilacBump · 14/12/2005 11:40

i like finn, not finlay

followthestarlover · 14/12/2005 11:40

finbar is fab as well! reminds me of catch 22...

i get stares at my ds's name too LM, and I ALWAYS have to repeat it several times when people ask his name

MIstletAOU · 14/12/2005 11:43

I wanted Finnian for ds. Finn for short.

ItllBeLonelymumThisChristmas · 14/12/2005 11:53

Starlover, me too. People look at you as if you are from outer space (unless they are from Ireland, in which case they think it is as normal as James or Matthew!) and I have to spell it evrywhere I go (it is phonetic FGS!) I always wanted unusual names for my children but the way it has turned out, Finbar has the most unusual, and I must admit, other people's reactions are a bit of a pain.

followthestarlover · 14/12/2005 11:55

and people always ask where i got it too... why do i have to get it from anywhere? maybe i just like it!

bet they don't ask all the harry and jack and chloes mums where they got their names from

LizzylouDonkey · 14/12/2005 11:56

Actually they do , I have a Harry (Only one round here and at nursery) and our next door neighbours asked if we were Royalists!
