can anyone tell me if in the UK and Australia they routinely test for herpes when pregnant? And is it oral or genital herpes they test for?

not in the UK. If you are know to have genital herpes you would be given Acyclovir (an antiviral) from 36 weeks to ward off an outbreak. If you have an outbreak when you are actually labouring you'd be advised to have a section.
