Can you take too much folic acid?

Hi, i am 5 weeks pregnant, and obviously i am taking folic acid (given by G.P) today i have bought some pre - natal vitamins (because i dont eat correctly!) but they also have folic acid in, can i over do the folic acid? As in take too much?

not sure tbh, although I would think too much of any vitamin isn't good, especially in artifical form. Can you not stop taking the GP ones and switch to the prenatal ones, they both have the same amount of folic acid, don't they?

No, folic acid is totally non-toxic. The amount taken by pg women who have had a previous baby with a neural tube defect is about 10 times the 'recommended' amount for normal pg women which is in itself very conservative.
