how do you clean your teeth

with morning sickness? It's starting to really annoy me now. I'm 15+4 and haven't managed to clean my teeth without being sick since I was 5 weeks... I've tried changing to an electric toothbrush which is a bit better 'cos at least I don't have to brush them for so long. Anyone got any tips??? Or sympathy !

I have sympathy, but no tips I'm afraid!

I had the same thing when I was pregnant with Dd2, even now I gag when I brush my teeth and she is 4 years old. I have sympathy with you but no tips.

Lots of sympathy and like sparkly - I have a really strong gag reflex now.

I found just doing it VERY quickly then using listerine or something to gargle with in the hope they wouldn't rot during the 9 months was my solution.

Cut out the tooth paste and use a relatively dry brush (you can use a mouthwash afterwards to freshen your breath if you like). Doing it this way means you don't end up with a mouthful off foam which makes you gag and tbh you don't really need the toothpaste its the mechanical action of brushing thats important.

I can offer sympathy, too. I've had an oversensitive gag reflex since my first pregnancy. It has been the only thing that made me sick (and still does - sorry to tell you but I am 30 weeks!).

I find it's easier if I do it later in the day.

Will try brushing with dry brush then mouthwash tonight. I'm starting to get really reluctant to brush them, but hate them being dirty. Funny, when I was sick before pg, I always wanted to clean my teeth straight away if I was sick. Now I can't bear it! Am double-grumpy today because I fainted on the Tube into work and a bloke sitting down (who hadn't offered me his seat - and I'm obviously pregnant & was carrying issue of 'Pregnancy & Birth') grumbled about how 'this is how we get delays on the line'. After a morning of being sick, it's put me in a foul mood! Nice to know there are lots of nice people on MN, even if there aren't many on the Jubilee line

I had (1st time) and have (2nd time now) this but it was made better by changing toothpaste brands - the one I use now has a much thinner consitency.

have you tried just brushing them later in the day? this is what i used to do, would get up, have a glass of water, wake up ds1 get hm breakfasted and ready for school, try and have my breakfast. eat a tic tac, take him to school, come back and brush my teeth.

for me it was brushing first thing that would make me sick, so if i could leave it for a while i would be ok.

sadly my nausea doesn't get much better later in the day - I'm sick when I brush them at lunchtime & at night as well. I usually clean them after breakfast so at least I'm not retching on an empty stomach (sorry if tmi!!). At least I'm not quite as sick now as I was at 6-10 weeks. But I was really hoping I'd be completely better after 14 weeks... It does make me feel much better to know that so many of you understand!

I was the same when expecting dd. I brushed mine in the while in the shower. BUT that was because leaning over a sink was making me sick (still does!!). Worked a treat with me.

BTW I had morning sickness way beyond 24 weeks...

Same problem here - and like some of the others I never really recovered from the gag reflex in the morning and DS is 18 months old. 22 weeks with No2 and I just can't brush in the morning at all - after the first really yucky week where you daren't talk to anyone in case your breath honks, your teeth seem to get used to it and don't feel as horrid. Do a really good clean pm with electric toothbrush and don't rinse is my only solution.

I wait till I have had a drink first but it doesnt help much but I have sympathy x
