flucloxicillin: safe in pregnancy?

Grateful if any doctors (or anyone with knowledge!) out there could tell me if it is safe to take flucloxicillin in pregnancy. This is apparently part of the penicillin group of antibiotics. GP has recommended it to get rid of a breast infection (site of previous abscess which seems to be reactivating as milk ducts wake up again). I'm 16 weeks+.

Iam no doctor,but have been described thAT today due to mastitis....i am nearly 40 wks and was told it was fine to take even when breatfeeding,though dont just take my advice,in any case sure someone willbe here soon...

Thanks Ebbie22. Sorry to hear you've got mastitis before you've even had the baby but slightly relieving to hear that another GP (I assume?) has said that Fluclox is safe in pregnancy. My GP is good but a bit gung-ho where medicine is concerned so it's nice to have another opinion. Are you having to take it 4 times a day which is the dose I'll be getting?

I took it while b/f in last pregnancy (mastitis then abscess) so feel less worried if I have to do so again but hate the thought of having to take it while pregnant.

wait...i got it wrong,am taking cefalexin,3 tims daily...But i did take it when i was bf,with dd last time....sorry sorry sorry,should of read it prop;y..My gp was reading out what i had b4 and what was safe to use whilst pregnant bf....Phone nhs direct if still unsure,.....

I am assuming GP did say it was ok? Maybe double check with pharmacist? It was prescribed for my DS when he was about 8mts old to clear up a skin infection - so it's safe for babies (I guess depending on dose).

I have been prescribed this for dermatits that I suffer with (I normally take tetrocylcline which is not safe in pregnancy) I was really worried about taking so just used the cream I was given however went back to the GP and she showed me the 'medical book' and she showed me in black and white where it showed it was safe in pregnancy she also explained that it is used for women who suffer severe morning sickness aswell I completely understand you anxiety but I hope this helps.

supersonic, that's really helpful. It's just that my GP, while excellent, is very breezy when it comes to handing out medicine so just wanted to check that his airy "oh, this'll be ok for pregnancy" does have some basis in fact!

Feeling some safety in numbers from your post. Sorry to hear about your skin. I get this sometimes but had no idea that flucloxicillin was used to treat it. When's your baby due?

One more attempt to bump to see if any doctors or relatives of doctors are out there or if anyone else has been prescribed flucloxicillin during pregnancy.

It's absolutely no problem.

I had similar worries over amoxycillin - same family of drugs - so I asked my step-dad was a government medical consultant until last year and he said no problems especially after first trimester as most important bits are formed! He did recommend the British National Formulary website though - free to register and has a list (suprisingly short) of drugs to be avoided or used with caution.

Really helpful, Hannah,thanks. Knew someone would be well connected! And, phew, at 16 weeks at least I'm just past first trimester. Will check out that website though.
