how many clothes to buy for baby?

Hello
I am a first timer and trying not to go overboard buying loads of stuff I don't need. Just wondered if anyone could advise on roughly how many items of baby clothing I need to buy. I am due in December so warmth is a necessity!
So far I have got
8 sleepsuits (long sleeved)
3 hats
1 cardie
1 cosy pram suit
and I have ordered
14 vests in newborn, 7 vests in 0-3 months
I am assuming we will get given cute cardies/trousers etc once baby comes and we know whether tis pink or blue, so just wanted to get basics to see us through the first week or so.
Anything else I need to get?
Oh and I've got 4 moses basket sheets (fitted), 3 cellular blankets. Will that do for bedding?

That sounds perfect for a newborn! You have a good supply of the essentials - vests and sleepsuits.
May I also suggest a jersey swaddlecloth/ sheet or soft flanelette sheet. Means you can easily lift a newborn to feed at night.
For yourself make sure you have some cosy sleep socks and a blanket/ wrap as you will get cold too.

Scratch mitts, if you are using, but other than that it sounds like you are sorted good luck,

I have 6 vests and sleep suits in size small baby / newborn / 0-3
1 neutral "going home" outfit. (though planning a home birth so hope not to go home!)
2 neutral pairs of cotton newborn trousers and 2 long sleeve tops. (so 3 outifts that arnt PJ-ey, but tbh when tiny i like them in white sleep suits as they look so cute and newborn-y.

Half of my sleep suits have build in scratch mitts and half dont
i also have 5 pairs of newborn socks (not sure why when the sleep suits and trousers have feet!)
3 scratch mitts
3 hats
and a fair few cardigens have been knitted by relatives

2 pram suits (both hand-me downs from friends)

I think i have 6 moses basket sheets (but also the sheet for pram)
2 cellular blankets, some other blankets, a swaddle sheet and some cotton sheets to be blankets or swaddle sheets!

Everyone knows we dont know if boy / girl and ONLY have white stuff, so I hope people will take the hint and bring some cute outfits for baby!

Sounds perfect. Not too much or too little.

I have brought similar amount for dc2 and am thinking will it ever wear dc1s if new outfits given!

I actually found trousers with feet and popper vests a lot easier for the constant nappy changes, especially when there were leaks! Only used sleep suits for night time. Some sleepsuits also have built in mittens - they always fell off of DS!

Also worth getting some soft bibs to protect clothes from (the many) spit ups, especially as you only have one cardie on the list.

I second the suggestion of trousers with feet - then you can make the most of the vests. We got given more sleepsuits and vests than cardigans, and I think you might want more than one, especially in winter. If you see a nice one, I'd buy it cos I found it quite hard to find nice cardigans. But that could just be me.

We bought newborn and 0-3 sizes and then found when he was born that everything was too big so we had to go out and buy some stuff in tiny baby sizes. I was surprised, especially as DS was not tiny - he was over 7.5lb and 50cm long. So could be worth buying a few things in that size too - maybe keep labels on so you can return them if not needed?

We haven't used bibs at all yet but he's not very sicky. We got given a lot of bibs, hats and socks, if that helps.

I would also make sure when people ask you what to buy or what size u tell some newborn some 0-3 and some 3-6 or you will end up with loads of 0-3 that you only get one use off each. happened to my sister niece was like Paris Hilton with an outfit for every day until 3 months then suddenly she had nothing to wear!! there was even a few things that got sent to charity shop with the tags on.

The short answer is yes - that all sounds plenty, because never underestimate how much stuff people will buy you once the baby is born! We got clothes up to 1 yr when our son was born and my ILs still bring him a bag of clothes every time they visit. People generally LOVE buying baby clothes, my advice would be to just to get a few sleepsuits and baby gros for hospital and then wait and see what you get. Its a good idea to get a snowsuit (cute all in one thing that zips up) to take baby home in.

The bedding sounds fine too, as you'll probably get given loads of blankets too.

I recently got a few 'bundles' or 'Job Lots' on ebay.

I got a whole lot of cute newborn and 0-3 months clothes, dresses & shoes - most barely used for 20 / 30 pounds.

Not everything in a bundle will be ok or to your taste and some stuff will be stained or just been washed so much that it looks and feel worn out.

This is specially true with tights, socks, vests, t-shirts and sleepsuits. These are definately worth it buying new.

But the cute dresses, jackets and pretty clothes that babies usually wear once or never (most of it have tags on still) - these is what buying these bundles are all about ;o)

I have a really cool wardrobe waiting for my little princess and it didn't cost me much :-D
