Hi,

Bit of background. I have 2 dc and in between those I had a m/c. I started ttc3 and had a m/c before xmas and one after xmas. I am now pg again. I know the date I ovulated as I follow my temp and had myself at 6w 4d yesterday.

Yesterday morning I had some brown discharge so went to see the doc. With my history of m/c, I got send to EPU for a scan.

When in with the sonographer, they told me that I had a nice shaped sac (measured at approx 6w 6d), a nice yolk sac and she thought there might be a start of a fetal pole. Her and the other lady in there seemed quite positive. However, when I went back to see the nurse, the report from the sonographer said that no fetal pole was present so she said that by now this should be present so they can't really say if the pregnancy is ok or not. I thought that they would re scan me but they said that now I have to wait until my 12 week scan.

Does this sound good or not?? Should I have seen a fetal pole or a h/b by now. I'm sure that when I had my ds, I went for an early scan due to spotting and saw a h/b.

Congratulations on your BFP and really sorry to hear that you are experiencing this confusion. I've heard of hb's being seen that early but still ending in MC (happened to me) and in other cases no heartbeat being seen but it all ending well.

I think it would be very unfair of them to make you wait until the 12wk scan - I would ask for this to be brought forward to 7.5 or 8 weeks when they should be able to see a hb. If they say no the other, more costly alternative is to pay for a private scan yourself around those times. At least that way you won't have to agonise over this for another 5 weeks.

fingers crossed for you and one last piece of advice - avoid Dr Google as you might drive yourself mad!

Hi summer - sorry epu were so unhelpful - it would be ridiculous of them to make you wait until your 12 wk scan. Like bigmac says it really could go either way (which I'm sure you already know) however I would expect that the epu would have advised you of what to do if you get bad pain/bleeding or if you (hopefully) get neither then they should atleast offer a scan in 10days/2 weeks time. The sac is supposed to grow about 1mm a day I think at that stage so by a week they can normally tell what direction things are moving in.

My epu told me just to say I had pain or bleeding if I ever wanted another early scan after 2 mcs! I'd be tempted to do that or re-visit your GP in a few days and explain you're understandably concerned and see if they will re-refer you.

Wishing you all the best x

I thought it was standard to scan a week later if they could not see the heartbeat. I would go back to GP/phone them and get referred again.

Hi summerblaze

This happened to me. I went for an early scan because I have diabetes. My LMP put me at 6+4 but I knew my cycle was longer so didn't think I was that far along. There was no hb and the sonographer seemed to think that given the size of the sac, we should have been able to see one. He was very negative and as such I prepared for the worst. They wouldn't confirm mc at that stage so booked me in for another scan one week later (7+4 according to LMP). At that scan they found an hb and I was measuring exactly 7 weeks. I'm now 34+2 and huge lol! I'm not saying the same will happen to you but just wanted to let you know my experience.

I would definitely ask for a scan either one week or two weeks after the first. I'm sure it isn't right that they're making you wait until you're 12 week scan.

Good luck and take care

xx

I am also 6 weeks 4 days and had brown bleeding for most of last week, after a missed miscarriage at 11 weeks in March I had convinced myself that I was losing this baby too. It turns out that I had a burst ovarian cyst which explains my pain and bleeding. I was scanned yesterday and they found a sac, yolk sac and a tiny fetal pole with a flickering heartbeat, plus another two cysts. I was thoroughly shocked and delighted as I just presumed that blood = miscarriage. Your dates may just be slightly out which would explain the lack of fetal pole at this stage. I would try to get a referral from your GP or even just turn up at EPU in a day or two if the bleeding hasn't settled down. I hope it all works out for you x

The brown discharge has stopped now but obviously without seeing that h/b, I am still wondering if this will end in m/c especially with already having 2 since December.

I am actually on holiday now (went straight after my scan). By the time I get home and the EPU opens up on the monday, I will be 8w 2d. I have a number and they said to call if I have bad pain or redder blood. Should I just say I have even if I haven't.

Personally, yes, I'd tell a fib about having cramps or red bleeding and demand a scan. It's ridiculous to make you wait that long, the stress would be awful.

PrincessScrumpy · 18/08/2011 20:46

I had brown discharge and a scan at 6w - no hb. At 7w scan we saw two very strong hbs - ID twins. Now 35w pg with them.

Congrats and best wishes. x

Update mainly due to the fact that when I was going through this and was searching for stories, I found lots but never found out how it turned out. Now if someone is searching and finds this, there will be an outcome.

I ended up waiting until my 12 week scan as I didn't want to go too soon and there still be no definite yes or no. The spotting stopped and I started with m/s which I didn't have with my 2 m/cs so I spent the next 5 weeks dreading the scan date. When we went we saw a beautiful h/b. I was so shocked as my pessimistic side had convinced me that I had lost it. They also changed my due date to my birthday.

My DS is now 5 weeks old and is perfect. Thanks to all who replied to me in my manic state and I hope this helps someone reading in the future. Sorry if this is not the done thing but felt I had to.

what a wonderful story! I read as I've had 2 missed mc myself and have done lots of research on them and thought I might be able to reassure someone even though my similar situation ended badly. I didn't notice the dates until your last post and have gone a bit teary! Congratulations! Grin

littlepinkfizz · 21/05/2012 22:04

Aw that is lovely- how great to come back and finish your story. I'm sure it will help many other worried mums. Congratulations on your wee one x
