Pregnancy Hormones or something to be wary of when the time comes?

A little over half way with my first pregnancy and a couple of niggles with some things my MIL has said. Just to clarify, this is not a MIL-bashing thread...I simply would like to know if I should say something to her or not....

*She has picked herself up a second hand carseat from a carboot sale (haven't seen it, but could be faults you can't even see)
*Got a crib and mattress from a friend at work (don't know if smokers/pet owners etc)
*Bought a duvet/pillow set for the baby (actually did say "does it say on it 1yr plus, I wasn't sure if they do newbon ones?")

I genunely thought the above were big no-no's in preparing for a baby but really don't want to be the one who goes "you shouldn't do this...or that....or that either"...

I really don't think im PFB, generally, but wondering if my concern at the above is genuine, or my first bout of PFB-itus?

I would say No, No & No to all of them!....They dont even recommend you use the same mattress for siblings any more which is news to me on my 3rd pregnancy.

I think the crib would be ok if non smokers/pet owners but definitely a new mattress....think I would like to know what type of home it was from, but I have been known to be OTT!...

The carseat is a no-no, although maybe you could use it as a rocker seat so it's not wasted.

The crib is fine, just give it a bit of a wipe down with some antibacterial spray. Measure the mattress and get a new one - a cheap one will be fine if it's for occasional use.

Save the duvet for when your DC is one, and check the pillow - I was advised not to use one until the age of 2.

Maybe buy her a book about baby care, I think there are grandparent-specific ones around?

My MIL (who is quite nice) tends to do similar things.

I find it easiest to broach with a bit of a 'I know it's ridiculous, and you have had 5 children and obviously know best, but silly government recommendations are that......It's daft, isn't it. I don't know how babies used to survive etc. They'll be saying something else next week...anyhow, just to be on the safe-side I better go along with it.'

This seemed to cover second hand car-seats, passive smoking, baby rice in bottles, weaning at about 3 days!, quilts, laying on tummies...you name it.

My MIL and I have very very different views about child care, but with this (basically arse-licking!) approach we have managed to only exchange cross words once in 3 children! ( It was about smacking.)

Glad im not being OTT, so thank you for easing my mind. Am hoping I can avoid the items by dropping little one off in our carseat, so she may just use that, and to be honest, hoping to breastfeed so not really sure baby'll need to stay overnight there until it' outgrown the cot. Will hint hard about the duvet as and when it does stay over!!
