Lavender and tea tree essential oils in pregnancy?

I'm 33 weeks pg and have asked my midwife on whether it's safe to use lavender and tree tree essential oils. I'm looking to use these in the home mainly but also use lavender in the bath and on my pillow at night.

Unfortunately, she hasn't been all that helpful and I have found slightly confusing info online. I think both are fine, but slightly paranoid - just in case!

Anyone able to confirm?

No idea, sorry. All I can tell you is that during birth I had a tear, the stitches didn't hold so it had to heal naturally, and a few drops of lavendar or tea tree oil in the bath kept me lovely and clean and I didn't get infected and need antibiotics!

Sorry that doesn't answer your question whatsoever!!! Smile

Not sure about tea tree, but my reflexologist said that lavender oil (in a carrier) is fine in the third trimester, so you should be fine with that. Just don't over do it I guess Wink

Hi,
Not sure about tea tree, but I was told by a midwife that Lavender is a no no during pregnancy, as there is a risk of causing miscarriage. However she said English Lavender was okay, but mixtures/French Lavender grown at high altitude was not. To be on the safe side, when I'm pregnant, I use this www.amazon.co.uk/Sleep-Therapy-Goodnight-Pillow-Nights/dp/B004IQ2U5U/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1312230601&sr=8-3 to help me relax. It's weaker than pure essential oils but works really well when I can't sleep. Hope this helps!

I had heard that 'common lavender' is okay - which I guess is English lavender??

I haven't heard that term but to be honest, I'm sure occasional use of lavender oil is fine. As long as you aren't massaging huge amounts of it into your body...

Odd as I'd been told lavender was the only "safe" essential oil in pregnancy. Perhaps that means the English lavender...

Lavender is fine if not ingested. That said I went to a lavender farm last week and I had really painful tightenings and brax hicks. It's meant to be a uterine stimulant.
I do have an irritable uterus tho!

All of the "mum to be" commercial products I bought when pregnant had lavender in them

lavender is safe for pregnancy. But be it any essential oil you should dilute it before use. I have heard that sweet orange and ginger oil can be also be used.
