People suggesting names for your baby?

Does anyone else get this?

Since we announced the pregnancy, I have had suggestion after suggestion of names for the baby.
And the names are almost universally awful not to my taste - my mother even makes names up! This morning she suggested Tandy! For a boy!

BF is not much better, all her names are surnamey type things.

Why can't people back off? As if they are going to come up with an amazing name that DH and I hadn't thought of, bugger off and name your own baby!

I think to be honest they are just showing an interest. We've told people our names so its a moot point with us.

Although I share your crazy hormones, someone told me I was big yesterday and I wanted to kill them. Made me really angry (I've got a smallish bump, can't tell i'm 32 weeks pregnant from back) and I swore to myself I'd never feel so uptight about people saying that when I was newly showing!

Unfortunately one friend did come up with 'our' name. So we discounted it and I'm now glad. DS so is not Levi!

firsttimer84, you're not 'big', you have a lovely neat bump and are glowing, pregnancy really suits you (don't hit me)!

I have come to the conclusion that people should just avoid commenting on pregnancy to me, nobody can say anything that doesn't irritate at the moment. Can't wait for labour then at least I won't be an idiot magnet anymore. The idiots can coo over the baby then. A ha ha.

The only time I get it is when round at my folks' - we all sit around coming up with the MOST ludicrous names, especially ones which make up silly acronyms (surname begins with an O so OXO and PAXO are frequent contributions Grin)

My brother thought it would be extremely amusing to suggest calling DD1 "Anna" - a nice name in it's own right, but coupled with my surname is a well known medication, and so not funny when in the third trimester. I nearly did as buttonmoon suggests - managed to smile and nod, then cursed loudly when out of earshot. Not really feeling "Tandy" TBH - where did that come from (apart from the former shop).

I didnt mind the name suggestions so much as the belly prodding and 'Wow, you"re big!' Wouldn't be too happy if I did it back!

Tandy - bloody made up name, thanks to (weirdo) Mother.

IvyandGold, you should try doing that, it honestly does shut people up.

buttonmoon has hit the nail on the head but unfortunately I suspect my smile is now more of a grit toothed grimace these days...

Lady1nTheRadiator - I do wonder why some parents think they can name your child for you? They've had their turn! I have heard of parents refusing to use a childs name and addressing the child by their preferred name, which is pretty controlling and odd too.

We have decided on our names and more or less told people now. This has avoided daft suggestions but we've had a few 'oh that doesn't really go with your surname' or 'I like XXX'. Well tough!

As for the bump comments, they range from 'You don't even look pregnant' to 'Only a stone of that is down to pregnancy, what about the rest?'

GRRRR!!!

I didn't mind any of the name suggesting, belly prodding, bump size pronouncing etc. I liked the attention.

I found two absolutely ridiculous names and stuck with telling people those - IIRC it was "Chardonnay" (with a dodgey Essex accent - for a boy, you understand) but I can't remember what the girl version was now. Said with enough conviction it made most people realise we just weren't going to talk about it without having to get arsey.

Re. weight, I lost 2 st the day I gave birth to DD1, so your colleague wasn't even accurate, Appley. I did have an obese (male) boss who made a comment about my weight the day I was going on maternity leave - I was shell shocked but a much nicer colleague pointed out I was pregnant but the boss coudn't really claim the same excuse. Made him Blush and everyone else :o (especially me :))

DH and I used to tell everyone the baby was going to be Igor or Gertrude (or Ermintrude, if we fancied a change Grin). Usually stopped them in their tracks....

But actually, my middle sister named DD2 - she was having loads of fun sending us ridiculous names by email, then she sent a sensible list one day (to catch us on the hop, she said) and there was DD2's name......

My mum came up with one that wasn't too bad the other day, I asked her where she'd heard it as it was very unusual. She very reluctantly told me it was the name of the pet rabbit she has at work and that one of the children she works with had made it up! Discounted that pretty quickly.
We've been telling people that the baby will be Voldemort for a boy and Griselda for a girl. Hilarious trying to watch them bite their tongues!

We told people DC2 would be Zoltan if a boy (DD1 had a "Z" name, so it was reasonably believeable). Was fun watching them try to figure out if I was lying.

lol i actually posted a status yesterday on facebook that read... the awkward moment when people keep telling you what they think you should name your baby and u dont like any of the names! lol it happens all the time with me, some of the names people give me are hideous! and then they tell me that thats their favourite names and i feel so awful for not liking them :( im pg with 2nd and just like the 1st wil not be telling anyone the name untill the babys born, so i have 20more weeks of people telling me what they think my babys name should be. i know that they mean well so will continue to be polite it just gets annoying sometimes that EVERYONE has to have an opinion!

It annoys me MUCH more when they ask you what you're thinking of and you tell them and they say 'oh no you cant call her that! i know a horrible child called that!' or just 'noo don't like that, how about this....'somethingawful'?'
Er I'll call my child what i like thanks...

I told someone my daughter's name, an they said "I had a dog called that". Her name is really classy as well, and not a "typical" dog name - not like we called her Spot or anything. So rude.
