Could it be amniotic fluid?

Hi, wrote a post yesterday about my horrid leaking at the moment. I just had a thought. I am pretty sure it is urine but how can I be sure?

It tends to happen when I cough which makes me think it is urine but it really does seem a lot. Sometimes it continues for 3-4 seconds and soaks a thick pad. I cant stop it or control it.

It sounds to me like stress incontingence but would I be leaking this much with it?
Im 27 weeks and it has only been happening int he past week.

It could be amniotic fluid, yes. The only way to know is to go and be checked out at the hospital.

I've had 2 early ruptures, 22 weeks and 30 weeks. Both time it was obvious that it had happened but It's not always obvious to everyone.

When you have a wee does it sound like more wee is coming out than it feels ?

Amniotic fluid can be pinkey, yellowey or clear and to me smells sweet, like hay.. not at all like urine.

Hi Ivor - I've had the exact same thing as I've had a bad cold and lots of coughing and sneezing over the last wk am 30 weeks pg. I was told to smell the pad (sorry I know it sounds yuck) to see if it smelt like urine and also to see if it was coloured in any way.

Midwife also offered to check a pad if I bought one in (I declined as concluded it was a bit of stress incontinence - the joys!) but if you are worried they can easily check for you

Stupefy, did it come out at any particular time, I mean if you put stress down there or was it just totally out of the blue. I have been trying to smell a few pads today and yes there is a sweet smell but I can also smell a bit of urine I think. When I cough it just literally runs (sorry for all the info!)

It is clear on the pad btw.

Yes I think so.
Is there a PH stick or anything you can buy to check it?
...and if it is incontingence is there anything they can do or do I just have to wait?

Best thing would be to ring the Maternity Unit and arrange to nip in an get checked. The test is really quick and easy, you'll know for certain one way or the other about whether it's amniotic fluid or not, and if it is then they can do whatever they need to for it. Don't be embarrassed or feel you're wasting time, you're not and the staff have seen it all before.

The first time (30w) was completely out of the blue, I thought it was wee and took myself off to hospital for some antibiotics only to be told my waters had gone and i;d have to stay in. It was Christmas day, I was NOT impressed!

DD was born vaginally at 30 weeks, spend 4 weeks in SCBU and is now 6 an top of the class.

The second time (22w) was the day after emergency cervical surgery and I knew what it was straight away.

Ds was born at 27 weeks, 2lb 2oz, spent 10 weeks on NICU and is 2.5 now and awesome from the top of his head to the tip of his toes

You really do need to go in and get checked out. The will give you speculum examination and make you cough and from that they should be able to see if there is any fluid coming out of your cervix. If it is fluid they will take some swabs to check for infection and start you on antibiotics, they will probably also give you the first of 2 steroid shots incase your baby decides to arrive early.

sound to me like you need to get checked out. If it is fluids and not urine there is a risk of infection so you will need antibiotics......i think

It was actually my bladder but they said they would refer me to a physio for it. Baby is fine. Being on the labour ward was a bit strange though (it was sunday so ante natal wasn't open) Lots of teeny weeny babies about!
Made me start thinking about getting move on with all the stuff I havent prepare yet! :)
