Acidy burning in throat!! Advice

Has anyone had a really horrible, burning, acid type feeling low down in their throat (about level with the bottom of the neck)? I get this normally when I am very hungry or at night when I am in bed. It sometimes goes away fairly quickly and sometimes stays for a while.
It's horrible. Is there anything I can do to get rid of it when it happens?

Gaviscon!

I drank loads of the stuff in the night towards the end of my pregnancy. It's acid reflux you are feeling (tummy acid escapes and rises up to your throat)

Welcome to pregnancy reflux! Mainline the Gaviscon it will help keep you sane.

Yup, I have terrible acid and in my case it has only got worse over the third trimester. Go to your gp or midwife and get a free gaviscon prescription - I'm about to get my third bottle!

Thank you. I was beginning to think there was something wrong!
Will try to get hold of some Gaviscon Smile

Acid reflux, I get it more when I am doing things like putting on my shoes or housework that involves bending down etc. Gaviscon is my friend!

Do love hearts work too?! That would be great if they did! Grin
Not sure when I can get to the GP for a prescription so will buy some on my way home today... Gaviscon that is! Smile

Love hearts do indeed work, as do fruit flavour rennies - but gaviscon is the best. I swig it straight from the bottle before going to bed, works a treat Grin

Does drinking milk work too or is that just an old wives' tale?!

Fruit flavour Rennie's mmmmm mmmmm mmmmm I got through bucket loads of them with DS. Sadly not had the need yet with DC2.

LaWeasel · 18/07/2011 16:12

If you hate the gaviscon/rennies (I did!) I recommend natural yoghurt's - dr oetker's fruit ones are fine.

Paschaelina · 18/07/2011 16:19

Yeah sipping ice cold milk works at that moment. Also i found peppermint chewing gum helped. The act of chewing releases saliva down your throat pushing the acid back and peppermint neutralises it a bit. Gaviscon coats your throat for a while though so works for much longer.

propping yourself more upright in bed is supposed to help too (with night time reflux). I slept practically upright for most of last 3months of my last pregnancy. even had reflux while in labour!

Pudding2be · 18/07/2011 17:20

Yep, I have that too. I even find water can set it off Angry

I don't like gaviscon, so I get by on rennies, milk and yogurt. I can drink about 2 pints a day Blush

Just think how strong our babies bones will be with all of thus calcium Grin

Gaviscon advance is the thing -- gloopier than ordinary gaviscon, but more effective. I get it free from the pharmacist without a doctor's prescription. If you are pregnant you can get prescriptions for minor ailments for free from the pharmacist. Here in Scotland all I had to do is register with the pharmacy, not sure how it works elsewhere.
