To buy or not to buy?

I'm 6+5 and now excited. After a week of uncertainty it has been confirmed that all is where it should be and there is a heartbeat so my pregnancy is not ectopic and everything looks good
How soon do you start buying baby things? I know I need to be careful and not tempt fate but we'd really like to start buying things as early as possible to avoid the stress my closest friend is currently going through, she's 34 weeks and has only just bought a buggy and awaiting the arrival of the cot!!!
Is now too early? I can't help looking at things on line but I'm sure it's just the excitement that all is well.
I would welcome any words x

hi, congratulations! You must be very excited and desperate to start buying for your baby. I would probably wait until into your 2nd trimester before buying though. I didn't buy anything for dd3 until 23weeks but with the twins I was a bit earlier. Probably about 12 weeks. Started buying earlier with them as I had so much to get and 2 of a lot of things lol. It's hard not to buy but maybe just do some window shopping in the meantime. That way you'll have researched your pram etc so by the time it's time to buy it you know you're getting the one you really want and will have had time to check out reviews. Especially now that you can buy most stuff online and it arrives within days. Take care and I hope you have a healthy and happy 9 months

It's a bit early i would wait till after 12 weeks as that's when the chances of miscarrying are reduced signfigantly but major purchases i would wait till after the 20 week scan which gives you plenty of time. Plus you may well know the sex by then which helps with shopping.

We bought a babygrow straight after our 20 week scan but I'm quite superstitious.

Can you wait until your 12 week scan or are you folding the corners of baby catalogues now as we 'speak' x

The 1st 12weeks are always risky in any pregnancy so maybe you should wait a wee bit longer but there is definitly no harm in window shopping! Browse the shops/magazines/internet for things that take your fancy and then you know what it is your after when your ready to start purchasing. I do recommend to start buying things earlier rather than later though as it helps to spread the cost as if this is your 1st baby you will need a whole lot of stuff andd bubbas dont come cheap x

Didn't personally start buying for any of mine until well after 12w scan. Most being done after 20w scan.

But do whatever feels right, theres no wrong or right and what will be will be.

You could always start a savings account and put a bit in every week till after your 20 week scan and have a look around decide what you want and then go on a massive spending spree after your scan (thats what i did and 5 grand later i felt much better lol)

And just to say that the health of your baby/outcome of your pregnancy is NOT going to be affected by whether you have bought stuff yet or not!

although now 39 weeks later i have run out of things to buy and still no baby i wish i had left some things for the final few weeks oh well picking my bouncer up tonight mamas and papas finally got it in stock yay

DH got rather excited and bought the car seat at 12 weeks. It wasn't the first thing we bought .

If you want to buy things then do.

I didn't feel confident enough too in the early days but I'm the cautious type.

I started buying baby things from 20 weeks - but I had previous issues so I just wanted to wait. But, everyone is different, so do what feels right for you.

The first thing I bought was the buggy at 24 weeks, I had miscarried in the past though so am very paranoid. I think I would wait till after 12 week scan in any event though.

Pregnant with dc2. Brought carrycot and car seat for existing buggy prior to even conceiving. Am now 22 wks. Have been buying properly 4 a few weeks now after doing research. I have brought very little but still prob some i could do without. Try and wait til 20 weeks. You really just need a few well researched things-especially as you Will prob be overwhelmed with gifts.

We didn't buy stuff until after 24w with dd1.

we started researching lots at 12w with this pg - twins - but still only started buying things after 20w. We've order the big stuff but not the double buggy yet as the one I want isn't available for another few weeks.

dh bought me a nice change bag at Christmas to say we could start trying for a second baby - I used the Boots bag that came free and it was great but I wanted something special this time.

We intended to start pretty much as soon as it was confirmed but I got a bit jumpy and waited untill 12wk, did however buy a couple of little bits - a teddy and baby grow, also bought a couple of bits that were in the sale, got a £60 stereliser for £10 so if you do come across a bargin grab it!

I picked a buggy at about 28 weeks but didn't buy it or anything else till about 32 weeks. Would have left it till I went on mat leave at 36 weeks but went on a panic spree as dr thought might have needed induction at 33 weeks.

The only things we've bought so far (I'm 16 wks) is bargain, bulk second hand clothes on eBay.
I don't see the harm in buying something small, but bear in mind people may be willing to help you out (your aunties, neighbours best mate may offer a cot or whatever) so I'd wait until after telling people to start buying (we told everyone I was pg at 5 wks).

If you're keen to get things sorted early, its worth talking to shops and seeing if they will hold goods for you and/or take them back around your due date if you buy them now.

Once you've got past 12 weeks (and even more so your 20 weeks scan) there is very little chance of things going wrong - but very little chance is not the same as no chance. The small, local independent shop we got quite a bit from had had a customer who's first baby had very sadly and unexpectedly died around her EDD. She'd bought everything she needed from a big chain - who refused to take anything back as by then she was out of the 28 day return period. The local store were happy to let us pay a deposit (which I think was fully refundable) and hold the goods for us until we wanted to collect them - balance payable on collection. IIRC we arranged an earliest collection time of about 37 weeks, on the grounds if the baby arrived before that they were likely to have a few days in hospital so we'd have time to get things sorted - but they didn't have stock hanging around in a small store for months. And if things went wrong they'd take the lot back as long as it hadn't been used.

Definitely start looking and planning and getting excited - I'd personally be cautious of handing over money and taking things home at such an early stage, just in case.
