Underwired bra debate (update)

For the ladies who were so nice after House of Fraser refused me service because I wanted to buy an underwired bra - I emailed the store manager and they admitted they were wrong, that it should be a recommendation to buy non wired not an absolute. They've apologised an offered me a facial to compensate, very pleased!

Have found another shop that will fit me thankfully - much less judgmental!

Oh good if they do a good job on the facial will that pull your boobs up to avoid needing underwire?
I have always worn underwired bras throughout all three of my pregnancies but I am not saying it is right for everyone. I didn't grow not an inch or a cup am still the same size I was when I was 15 (could probably wear a vest really) I want underwire to prevent spaniel ears in my elderly form.

I'm not wearing underwire, but just because it HURTS - finding even non underwire digs into my ribs, and spent most my time braless (is ok, am 24years slim build and a 34C, so not exactly drooping everywhere!). Have gone up at least one cup size already.

Well done for complaining Ive got 2 non-wired nursing bras but they are so uncomfy im using my t-shirt wired ones (36HH) I am contemplating buying some more wired ones and making my own nursing bras

My bra size hasn't changed at all and I'm nearly 28 weeks, still in underwired, I just find it much more comfy.

I wore underwire until the wire started to dig, not in my boobs but the top of my bump at around 34 weeks. Am now 37 weeks and living in sleep bras because I don't want to spend another £50 on a couple of bras that will only last a few weeks before I need nursing ones...

Re - Maternity bras - my friend bought expensive maternity bras (she's an HH) and just cut holes in the nipple area to feed DD through - much more discreet than exposing the whole breast and she just put nipple pads in when DD wasn't feeding - might be an idea for those unwilling to shell out loads on mat bras (including me!) x

I have to say that although underwired bras are not recommended in pregnancy or breast feeding i followed all the rules in my previous pregnancies and after breastfeeding x4 bubbas it has had a dramatic effect on my boobs! My nice pert 32 dd's are now small, saggy and like a 90 year olds This time round i will be wearing all the support man made materials can offer me lol. x

Winterlover My latest and happiest find is an under wired bra available up to a very generously cut H cup! So very likely to fit you, if not get a 38H and take in the sides to fit (they charge £15 in Rigby and peller to do this!). The bra is by Elomi, you can get it and read the reviews on figleaves but it's free P&P from Bras Galore.

Can't believe that some people believe underwired bras are harmful in pregnancy - this is such an old wives tale. Complete rubbish.

Hi ladies, I would 100% recommend going to Bravissimo (I used to work there so whilst I am biased, I don't really have any reason to push them now that I've left). You can either go into one of their stores, if you have one close by, or for even better convenience you can call them and have a telephone fitting! Sounds crazy, but it honestly works. Lovely people and great service... What's more, even if you are too small for their bras their fitters are still able to tell you your true size so that you can buy your correct size elsewhere - so don't be put off by the fact that they start from a D cup... Hope you don't mind me throwing in my two pennies worth!? xx

Sorry AKP79, I could only recommend Bravissimo for everything except actually buying a nursing bra. They are brilliant at fitting you, giving you tips and hints on your changing size, but they can't sell you what they don't have. The choice of nursing bras pitiful, no underwired bras, only 3 styles on offer at the moment.

Hi Scaredycat - I couldn't agree more! You're very right in what you say the range of nursing bras is absolutely dire, but it's a good place to go to get your size in a fitting and then you can take your new found knowledge elsewhere to buy a nursing bra etc. Although if you want to stay in under wires, as long as it fits correctly and doesn't sit on your breast tissue you should be able to wear any under wire you choose.

Absolutely agree, Scaredycat. I'm a confirmed Bravissimo girl, but the range of soft cup/nursing bras is woeful and I gave up on them last pregnancy.

Anita do great underwired nursing bras - highly recommended! Have a search online for them.
