This seems to be my biggest dilema!!
I think we are going to go for a "travel system" but have no idea which one. I also drive a 1 year old Ford Focus and have heard that not all cars seats fit well in them.

Does anyone have any good suggestions of how to start narowing down the list?

Thanks Mrs Bee

I have a really stupid question, but please bear with me: we do not have a car and plan to take a cab from the hospital with the baby. Can every taxi accommodate a car seat? Do I need to do anything special? (I do not drive, never had a car so have no idea what to do...)

Merinda, i guess that almost all taxis would accomodate a car seat (although never used one myself in a taxi i know many people who do)

If you get a universal one, like the maxi cosi, which fits in most cars i cant see why it wouldnt.

generally these seats dont fit in some sports cars or cars with very buckety seats, and thats not true of most taxis.
Some cars (especially vauxhalls, though by no means all vauxhalls) have long seat belt buckles which results in buckle crunch, with is not safe as in a crash the buckle can snap and seat is then not strapped in during the accident.
Saying that, while its obviously not safe / ideal / recommended id imagine baby would be safer in the car seat during such a crash, rather than on your lap.

Just make sure you fix it in in a forward facing seat, so baby is still rear facing

Britax do a baby safe sleeper, a car seat that is layed flat like a carry cot, it's also good for early baby's

the babysafe is good, but i think it takes two seats in a car? so not so good if you have or are planning more children?

Merinda, if you borrow a car seat from somebody to go in a taxi, make sure they show you how to fit it in with the seat belt. It can be quite tricky and the taxi driver won't necessarily know how to do it. Get your dp to have a practise
