Oversized foetus and no solutions offered

Hi there,
I had my 28 week midwife appt. yesterday and my bump measured 3cm more than the expected 28cm corresponding with my term. The nurse did say that she needed to monitor me, and that if there was additional growth above and beyond "the norm" after 3 weeks, they would book me in for another scan to see what the reason is.
She did mention something about gestational diabetes and glucose related growth spurts, but didn't really offer any information about what would happen if there was additional growth next time. She just said "nothing to worry about at the moment". Of course, that doesn't really stop me starting to worry. Has this happened to anyone else, and what are the implications. We are expecting a big baby anyway since all the men in the family are over 6'4". Am i going to give birth to Goliath?!!!

Aww, poor you for worrying. With DC3 I had a foetal measurement of 35cm at 28 weeks ! and was told the same, but the next appt I had they said they wouldn't do anything about it and they wouldn't scan either for bigger-than-date babies. Undersize babies, yes, big babies, no. No reason to worry except if shoulder dystocia might be an issue. Voice your concerns to your MW at next appt just to put your mind at rest.

I was also tested for high glucose, and although it ws on the high side of high, it was within normal scales.

My measurements then did go down (although resulting baby was huge (sorry!), but then I 'do' big babies). One MW told me it can depend on the 'lie' of the baby (i.e if he is lying transverse, that can affect the measurements).

With DC1 I was told I was going to have a huge baby.
She was 8lb something - big but not huge.

I measured 29/30cm at my 28 week appointment and my MW didn't say anything at all regarding size etc. The week before I had had a private scan and the estimated weight and measurements were spot on for dates. It's impossible not to worry but try to remember if something was that big an issue she would have had you in by now

I measured 30 cm too and my midwife said it was normal and not to worry. She said the measurements werent as accurate a a scan anyhow.

To be honest my family had babies that were small for dates and his were all huge and from the start I have suspected the little one inside me will be like his daddy, massive head and chubby little cuddler. i jst regret that he wants more room than i can give him.

I measured 1 cm ahead in my first pg and the mw sent me for a scan. All was fine. I measured 2 cm ahead throughout my 2nd pg. Nobody seemed concerned at all. All was fine. This time I have measured anything from just over to 3 cm over (at my last appt) again nobody seems bothered. I actually think the variation is down to being measured by a different person each time. Which goes to show how accurate it is. Try not to worry.

I was way over my 'size for dates' with my first baby from about 24 weeks onwards, and he was a big 'un (10lbs 6 0z), but he also came nearly 3 weeks late, so probably wouldnt have been huge if he was born on his EDD.

But I was also 2cm 'small for dates' with DD and she was born 3 weeks early weaighing a healthy 7 lbs, so take it with a pinch of salt.

Do push for more answers at the next appointment, though. If it is GD, excess fluid etc you need to know asap.

I had 8 scans with DS as my bump was always way more than the 3cm allowed.

They estimated 9lb 8oz and he was 10lb 6oz and extremely long,61cm.

But my first baby was 9lb 5oz and DP and I are tall so I always knew this would be a big baby.

They will probably test you for GD as this often makes the baby grow big.

Anyway.....big babies are not harder to deliver apparently so don't worry too much. (I had 2 c sections,not related to size though).
