Hi, my friend has just had her 20 week scan and has been told a 'shadow' has been detected. Does anyone have any idea what this could mean??

I had one of those on my 20 week scan on my dd heart. They called it an echogenic foci. They rescanned me at 23 weeks and it had gone and my dd was born at 38 weeks with no problem and she is now a lively 6 year old. HTH

it depends where it is - my dd2 had one on her heart and like blondehelen said it can go away prior to the baby's birth. I am surprised they did not tell her anything else. The echogenic foci can be a very soft marker for down syndrome - it simply means that your chance of having a child with ds is raised a little more than the average woman. As they found nothing else it would be very very unlikely that the baby is born with down syndrome. This is what they told me during my scan with dd2. It also means that as the equipment is getting more and more sophisticated - these are being found more and more BUT usually indicate nothing.

My dd2 was born with no problems.
