How do i know who my midwife is, and contact them???

Ok this may be a stupid question..

I had my booking in app with a community midwife (who was refered to by my old gp) she then booked me in for my scans, and i have a consultant appointment on monday...

I have no idea how to contact, or who is classed as my midwife. I want to change hospitals, i rang the midwives that deal with the hospital in particular, they said talk to GP, i went to my new GP, who said i have to talk to my midwife as they have my pregnancy notes... but i dont have a clue how to contact one as i have been given no details?

how far are you? Here, you don't see a MW again til after 24 weeks, once you've done booking in. Scan at 12 and 20, MW at 24, consultant at 30 then MW every 2 weeks til 38, then every 4 days til end. They'll get in touch when they want to see you

Im 14 weeks, so i am very confused who i need to talk to in order to change hospitals.. all the info i have been given has been rubbish so far, i had a uti, and rang the docs and they said ring my midwife.... i dont know who it is lol ahhhhhh

my midwife gave me contact details and my 5 week 'pre booking' appt (where 12 week scan was arranged)... and then a load of notes of stuff with it clearly on at my 'proper booking' appt at 9 weeks (which was a home visit)

In the notes i have loads of numbers including EPU at local hospital (that doesnt do giving birth etc) the main hospital, day numbers, 24 hour numbers, day and 24 hours numbers for my community midwife team etc...

If you want to change hospitals it won't be anything to do with the midwives who work at your current hospital. You need to see your GP and ask them to refer to you to x hospital.

Your GP sounds really crap! What on earth would he expect midwives to do about a UTI - they aren't allowed to diagnose it and they aren't allowed to prescribe the antibiotics that cure it! Maybe book in to see someone else at the practice?

My community midwife is based at the doctors, I would ring the GP reception and check with them. Our anti-natels are at the docs at 16w 20w etc.

ring the surgery and ask to make an appt with the midwife

You may not have a single midwife, but you will have a team of midwives at the hospital you're currently booked into. Call the labour ward there and ask to speak to a midwife - they should call you back if they're too busy there and then.

yup my docs are crap, it was my first visit and im not impressed, ihave managed to get the number of the lady who deals witht he referals at teh hospital i want to change to, so i will ring her myself!

do you not have any maternity notes yet? I think I picked mine up at the 8wk booking in appt as they filled them in mostly while I was there. On the front are all the contact details and I have them with me all the time.

I think you should maybe chase down your notes from whoever has them.

If it helps I haven't met my own midwife yet, and I'm now 25wks, but that's because I'm under a 'team' and just see whoever is there at the time, not the one named on my notes.

yes i have notes, but there is no mention if contact details for the midwife..

I am shared care, and just left a little confused as the first midwife i saw said "not to bother" making a 16 week app, as i have a consultant app at 14 weeks, today the consultant told me i should still see the midwife... but he couldnt give me the number, i rang gps and they didnt have the number either!!!

I have finally got it though... only because i had a bright idea, i know a sure start centre near me has midwives visting so they gave me the number...

God i hope the government doesnt slash funding to the nhs anymore than it already has lol

Good grief kri5ty they don't sound very joined-up at all!

I must admit like you I was surprised by the... ambivalence of my Surgery (I only signed up with one because I was pregnant, I hadn't been to the docs for 10 years!). I don't know what I was expecting really, but I was quite shocked by how little input there is, most of the time I feel a bit 'left to my own devices' kind of thing.

But compared to yours, mine seem very good indeed.

haha katie im glad im not the only one!! At least we know what the outcome will be... if all else fails, come labour day just waddle in to the nearest a&e :o

It's not lack of money, it's disjointed systems. My GP can only tell you when the MW is there, they have no clue about hospital numbers, drop in centres, you need your MW for that! Also a UTI in pregnancy should be seen by a GP!

We got appointment letters on the day of the appointment sometimes, just really rubbish organisation.

Good luck - call the main number of the hospital you want, ask for maternity and keep ringing until you get someone to answer (can be an issue), ask them who to call re community midwife support. I hope this works for you.

This sounds pretty typical. You can usually self refer, so contact the hospital you want to change to. If you have problems contacting them and have some time on your hands I would just rock up and deal with them in person....go to the antenatal department.

Thanks guys :-) I just rang the new hospital and they confirmed it was my gp who did the referral... so I left her a lovely message saying 'do it NOW!' Haha, fingers crossed it'll get done... Im not holding my breath though!

After 4 phone calls I now have the number of the community midwife hurrah!

I hope you are getting sorted now.
Just thought i'd let you know you're not alone...I recently moved from South Manchester to Bolton area and so needed to swap from Wythenshawe (where i've had dating scan) to Royal Bolton. I had to register with a new docs who I explained to I was 16 weeks but they just registered me as newly pregnant so I've ended up having to go through booking appt again (more bloods taken they are different in south manchester to north apparently!) and have another dating scan booked for next week! I'm trying to get this changed so 20 week scan is ontime but i'm still waiting for them to phone me back. It just frustrates me that this duplication is necessary when resources are tight enough in the NHS!

ooo bennybenbear i wasn't expecting to have a dating scan again!
Although i probs will as the hospital comes under a different health authority... i will def try and put it back a little later so my 20 week scan is on time, i will be 16 weeks also by the time i see the mw... isn't it strange how our blood all of a sudden changes when we move!!

i need to get info on my pregnancy but due to strep b in dorset i cant see one i need my details as im sarrogating at the mo for someone and i get one i have healthy start vouchers but they have to be comfirmed by a midwife dont thay as they need proof ur pregnant so idont now how to get my info of her she is asian od indian and i cannot get hold of her
