Ceph 4/5?

I had to go to hospital last night after a fall. They have written ceph 4/5 on notes,does this mean head is almost engaged or barely engaged?

Cannot remember myself but sure it tells you in your green notes

Well according to my notes it means that 4/5 of the head can be felt so only 1/5 is actually engaged in the pelvis.

But my MW yesterday told me that my baby's head was no longer engaged at all and wrote this as 0/5 on my notes. So there appears to be some confusion!

I always thought that 4/5 meants 4/5 were in your pelvis, I was corrected on a thread recently which was when I checked my green notes. I suspect they have changed it at some point in recent years but not all MWs always remember!

I got much the same info when I googled! Completely mixed info.
I'm feeling a bit anxious as I'm hoping I'm not going to go into labour quite yet after my fall last night. Sprained my hip so without tmi wondering quite how I'd manage in labour when I'm unable to really twist,move or walk :(

I asked my MW about this the other day, as I'm now ceph 3/5, and she told me it means the baby's head has engaged 2/5 with 3/5 being felt above the pelvis, so it needs to get to 0/5 to be fully engaged.

I've heard though that some MW do it the other way round so probably best just to ask!

How many weeks are you icelolly? Is this your first?

I'm on No.4 and this baby seems to drop in and out of my pelvis on an almost daily basis!

I think if its your first baby can engage a few weeks before going into labour so not necessarily anything to worry about.

I have pretty bad PGP this time so am also struggling to move and walk although not quite the same. I would think if you did go into labour you will be fine, you may find you need your birth partner or MW to help you to change positions but I didn't really move a lot in the past once I found a position I was comfortable in. Kneeling and leaning forward positions may well be your best bet rather than on your back with hip pain and just so happen to be ideal positions for giving birth in anyway!

Maybe have a practise now and see what positions hurt you most and least and make a note in your birth plan? And you can still take paracetamol/cocodamol for the hip pain. You may also find that in the excitement of labour with the adrenalin and contractions that you forget all about the hip pain anyway! Although worth taking note of the positions that cause the worst pain so that you can avoid doing more damage without realising it if possible.

And I've just taken note of your name properly - I assume you have an ice lolly craving?! Ice lollies are my obsession at the moment! I have about 10 - 15 jubblys a day, mostly in the evenings once the kids are in bed! Have very nearly run out so going to nip to the shop on the school run in a minute and try and get some more!!

I figure its not a bad craving as really its just frozen squash isn't it?? Better than chocolate and cake anyway!

mw told me as I'm 4/5 that 4 parts are still above pelvis so only 1/5th engaged they can also disengage as well little blighters,altho she did say normally 1st timers once engaged do tend to stay put more than 2+ pregnancies

Thanks for your replies. I am 37+5 weeks. Got given co-dydramol at hospital which is really helping although it does knock me out,which is quite a blessing as I haven't slept for weeks! Seeing mw & consultant tomorrow so will see what they say. Can't stand the consultant though! Very intrusive in things which are irrelevant & I told him so on my last visit so I'm not expecting too much help from him!
I was convinced I'd be early,now not so sure.
Yes ice lollies have been a constant hankering throughout but not as extreme now!

Saw the consultant today & 4/5 means 4/5 is still to engage. He also said with big baby in first pregnancy you only usually get to 3/5 before beginning labour.

Ah youve also cleared this up for me, I was wondering about that :)
