My DH (and me, if I'm honest!) is itching to get a private scan done in the next couple of weeks. We don't want to know the gender, so that's putting me off a bit. Does anyone know if it would be 'obvious' if we had a little girl or boy by now?

Also if we decide to, how do I even go about getting a private scan?!

You can ask the scanner to zoom away from the relevant bits of anatomy. I had a scan last week at 22 weeks and told the lady we didn't wAnt to know the sex. She told us she knew after about 30 seconds of scanning but I'd stared at exactly the same seemingly random grainy blobs and was none the wiser. At one stage i said confidently, 'so that's the head?' and she said smoothly, 'no, that's the bladder...' and still I couldn't see what was what! Umbilical cords can look just like dangly bits.

Re getting private scan, depends where you are. Prob best to google to find a place near you.

Private scans are likely to be quite clear, although, only if you know what you are looking for. Just ask them to keep away from that area.

I highly recommend babybond if they have a clinic anywhere near you, as they were great for us. If they don't, just google for your local area, and check prices as there are a great variation.

i cant make anything out on the scans. i dont want to know what i am having and have had 5 scans and a 4d scan (although we asked not to see that area on the 4d scan)

The scanner told me mine was a boy and zoomed to a little thing and said there's the proof! However I wasn't sure exactly what I was looking at and when she zoomed out I had no idea what to look for again, so I wouldn't worry x

I am being scanned every week at the moment and don't want to know, haven't seen anything yet that would give it away! Just let them know you dont want to know x

We had a private 3d scan at 27 weeks when pregnant with DS, we said we didn't want to know the sex and the scanner just avoided the crucial areas.

No, there is absolutely no way the gender would be obvious.

Now, the sex, on the other hand...

nickelbabe · 14/06/2011 14:41

see, Tortoise - comments like that have been confusing the hell out of me for months!

from the WHO:
"Sex" refers to the biological and physiological characteristics that define men and women.

"Gender" refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviours, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women.

Just in case anyone else is as confused as me.
(and i'm glad I looked that up, because I genuinely didn't know there was a difference and thought "gender" was just a word that meant you didn't have to say the "S" word )

nickelbabe · 14/06/2011 14:41

it was from this page

KatieWatie · 14/06/2011 14:48

Yes I was avoiding the S word because I am posting from work

But thanks for that [eye roll]

We had a 4d scan at 26 weeks, As she put the scanner on my belly she pulled it off and said oh do you know what your having, I said yes, luckily as the first thing you see when the DVD is turned on is his boy bits!!! but the said a lot of people dont want to know and they just keep from scanning that area.
