Anyone out there who had a breast abscess when feeding after their first child and who has now had a second child? Reason I ask is that I am in that position and now at 13 weeks my breasts are starting to be painful and the right side (near where the abscess was) is starting to feel infected/leak a bit (sorry, tmi). Anyone else had experience of this and what did you do? Really don't want to take antibiotics in case they harm the baby.

No experience, but most antibiotics won't harm the baby. You will be able to take them safely and if it stops you getting a breast abscess, do it.

Yes I had abces with ds 12 yrs ago and had dd 9 yrs later - Do you have oversupply situation?
If so I tried feeding one one breast only
Feed off one breats, nappy change, ply then back on the same breast, this worked really well with dd.
Also do do do double check your bras, use cabbage leaves inside your bra to take away the heat. drain a little off the sore boob in a hot shower just allow it to drip until comfy, keep feeding the baby off that breast using paracetamol if needed, keeping the ducts flowing is important, if it is too sore to feed, then pls see a doctor.
I had no probs with 2nd child, my advice is 10 yrs old I hope to god it is still relevant as it saved my breastfeeding my ds all those yrs ago.

ply=play etc

Thanks both of you. Piffle I'm a way off feeding yet (only 13 weeks!) but after last time am fairly confident that I will be able to feed through a problem. It's only that the problem has reared up so early in the pregnancy that makes me concerned.

Hunker, it is reassuring to hear you say that. I do have a "thing" about not having antibiotics when pregnant and I'm particularly concerned here because I needed such strong ones to sort out the abscess problems.

An infection in my breast won't hurt the growing baby will it?

Shouldn't do, Geranium. Keep bumping your thread - am sure you'll get some good advice. Congratulations on your pregnancy!
