Tooth ache at 6 weeks pregnant! Ouch :(

Im currently 6 weeks pregnant & my tooth has been niggling all weekend, tonight the pain is awful & my jaw, ear & head are aching.

Is it safe to take paracetamol? Just phoned out of hours dentist & she said she 'thinks paracetamol is ok'.....im such a worrier & this & morning sickness is really making me feel awful

Yes you can take paracetamol. I asked my midwife at booking in appointment as i was getting regular headaches.

Another thing you could try rubbing oil of cloves on your tooth & surrounding gum. Tastes awful though so try not to swallow too much of it!

Thanks babychoochoo, took 1 paracetamol & that took the edge off it, its back this morning though, along with morning sickness.

hi hun i had wisdom tooth pain at the begining of my pregnancy all i could use was paracetamol x i found a hot water bottle helped under a towel x hope you feel better soon x

Thanks Valiant, just got back from the dentist, shes put a temporary filling in it, but cant do much else until after the baby!..She wouldnt prescribe antibiotics either, told me to try my gp in a couple of days if the pain doesnt calm down, off to bed for a sleep with my hot water bottle now x

BS: I'm a dentist. Paracetamol is fine in pregnancy. As is dental treatment. Best to have in 2nd trimester when baby is less vulnerable but you are fairly comfortable still. Local anaesthetic injections are fine, I would avoid amalgam fillings (have white instead) while preg or BFing. Dental xrays are OK, though would have the minimum necessary to get you out of pain. The xrays go nowhere near the baby. You can also have antibiotics if necessary (penicillin is OK if you are not allergic. Definitely have the minimum amount of drugs, xrays and dental treatment, but you CAN have treatment while pregnant.

I feel for you, had really swollen bleeding gums and some of my teeth felt loose when I was about 6 - 10 weeks. Was 3 weeks of pain before I found out I could have paracetamol. I hadn't realised till coming on here back then that it was quite common in pregnancy. Hope it goes soon for you, you forget how all consuming tooth ache can be. x

I'm so glad I found this thread. I'm having gum pain (swollen) at the back where my wisdom tooth is. I have no trouble eating or talking though. I have had slight ear pain with it. I get this about once a year and after a week it usually settles.

Thank you sprinkles77, wish you were my dentist!....My tooth is aching so bad tonight, will have to phone the GP in the morning if its no better, another sleepless night tonight....My ear is aching too mum2be79, its awful, last time I had tooth ache I was pregnant, but was half way through 2nd trimester & it was a different dentist, & she removed the tooth for me.

minnie, find another dentist! You really cannot be expected to put up with this pain just cos you're pregnant. This is the reason for the old wife's tale of "losing a tooth for each pregnancy", because pregnant women don't get treatment, based on poor advice, and while waiting for permission to see a dentist things deteriorate. Believe me, it's going to be much harder to get a dentist once you have a baby to look after.

Sprinkles, I know, I said that to my husband last night, bf a new born every couple of hours isnt exactly ideal for popping to the dentist!...Plus its my 3rd baby, so I have 2 other littles ones to fit into that equation!...I think im going to try & speak to the emergency dental centre & see what they say, it does feel slightly less painful this morning, but im not convinced keep going back for temporary fillings is the best plan of action.
