Hayfever and pregnant!

I have seen a discussion on here in the past year saying it's fine for pregnant women to use Piriton. I asked at the pharmacy and they wouldn't give me any. Is there anything deemed safe for hayfever that I can take? (I can send dh in to get it next time) I'm 15 weeks. TIA

I took Piriton. I think the consensus is if you really can't bear not to take anything then Piriton is the safest to take.

It's a risk benefit thing. The pharmacy staff are not wrong to not sell it. You need to go to your doctor to have it prescribed. As you can imagine no drug company can get a group of pg woman to do clinical trials on so there is limited data.

hope you find a solution by the way. I'm suffering myself at mo. 3rd pg and all I will say is that I'm keeping twn lady in business when I sneeze!!

I was told to take piriton by different gps when I've been pregnant. It's a nightmare sneezing when heavily pregnant isn't it.

snap, suffering badly too. Off to GP in a bit to see what he says. Read you can use some nasel sprays too. will let you know what he says.

My brother recommeded one of those infra-red nasel probe thingys from lloyds pharmacy. Can't see it says not for pregnant women, will ask about that too!

The pharmacies won't sell it unless on prescription, I checked with my consultant and am taking beconase and lortadine, may be worth running past your doc first though?

My pharmacist also (quite rightly) refused to sell me anything.

I am already taking anti sickness tablets which are an antihistamine so will need to get anything else prescribed (and not sure if i can have another antihistamine as well (and my anti-sick are my top priority at the moment)

Pharmacist suggested that dr could prescribe me eye drops and nasal spray but that he couldnt sell it to me.

I have heard that acupuncture is great for hay fever and naturally you're able to do it when pregnant (I've heard it can have long lasting effects too).

Sorry 'heard' is that I know someone who had treatment and no longer suffers from it. Don't know if it would work for everyone and I know she researched it quite well before going in to it.

whatever you do, don't let yourselves be fobbed off by a gp who says you can't take anything. there are safe meds out there that you can take.
I was prescribed flixonase (a steroid nasal spray), as I can't take antihistamines due to astma.

Yes I had the red laser nose things while pregnant with my first. I find they help a snotty nose but not my eyes or itchy throat.

Sneezing is mighty fun when your pelvic floor is to shot!

I hate seeing the doctor for pointless things, especially for over the counter stuff; hence asking here first.

Am also taking cyclizine (sp) so I'm not sure what can be taken with it. :( eurgh I hate summer.

A friend saw an ad in a paper for a new hayfever remedy called Prevalin which is supposed to be suitable for pregnant people. I asked my GP last week about it and he'd never heard of it, said he'd look into it and ring me back, no surprise that I haven't heard back from him yet. Also asked a pharmacist friend about it & she'd never heard of it either. Reluctant to get any when I don't know much about it. Am miserable with hayfever now. Anyone heard of it or using it? For eyes, I believe we can take Opticrom drops, no?

There was a similar thread on here a while back which also mentioned Prevalin but I haven't tried it.

I suffer badly with hay fever but tend to just 'suffer' most years as I worry about becoming immune to the drugs. But it's really a lot less fun this year with the baby pressing down on things . I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to get a 'sneezing' soundtrack when baby arrives so that it feels at home!

I asked on Facebook if anyone knew where I could buy local honey and was shot down in flames that I shouldn't eat honey when pregnant - this was news to me, anyone know if it's true??

KatieWatie - I think you should be ok with local honey. I am using this myself, but can't really say if it works or not TBH.

I suffer pretty badly, so am trying these things as well:

Haymax (barrier cream/wax that you put at base of nostrils)
Anti allergy unit (nasal probes thing with infra red light)
Air purifer
Neti pot (not bought salt yet, but will be ordering some v soon)
Water spray (spraying the air in rooms at home to increase humidity)

I am going to ask the GP about Prevalin as booked to see her next week again about hayfever as really suffered over weekend despite growing arsenel of products .... who knows, might help!

Hi, just back from my lovely GP. Gave prescription for nasal spray (Fluxi something), can take piriton and also an asthma pump. So i'm set.

As for sneezing with weak pelvic floor, I was mortified last week when i wet myself during sneezing fit!

I've decided to try and cope without... Don't know how I'm going to cope but I figured I would give it a try. My methods include permanent big sun glass wearing, vaseline permanently stuck up my nose, clean sheets and my bedroom window shut tight and a fan. I am only 16 weeks and I figured I'd rather be a little further along before I give in to medicine... The acupuncture sounds interesting though.

KatieWatie I've never heard about avoiding eating honey in pregnancy. I'm still eating it and with my last pregnancy, it was the one thing I craved. I ate it morning, noon and night on and with everything....DD is fine.

There's nothing wrong with having honey when pg - you just can't give it to babies until they are a year old, so maybe people got confused.

I use prevalin - you can get it from Boots, where it's on the shelves, not behind the counter. It's ok - I have to use a combination of prevalin, haymax and the red light probe thingy that you stick up your nose. None of them are as good as the proper drugs - but I'm too scared to use these as yet, as I had to take a fair bit of medication to stop me from miscarrying at the start of this pg. I've heard that nasal sprays are better as your body doesn't absorb as much of the drug - but all the ladies on here who have been prescribed the other stuff wouldn't be able to take it if the GP didn't think it was ok.

I didn't suffer much when I was pg with DD, but am struggling a bit more this time round - apparently this is a particularly bad year for hayfever though....

yeah - the honey thing is because of infant botulism - I don't think that it's a risk in utero. Reading thread avidly as this is the 3rd June I have been pg and is always very sneezy. Urg.

Sneezed today and head butted my steering wheel. Nearly bloody killed myself. It has settled now I'm in the house. Bastards keep mowing their lawns.

I was given Flixonase nasal spray and eye drops by my GP.

Hi, try a NATURAL vitamin named spiralyne contains spirulina, with a spoonful of honey it really works and it is all natural (sea algae).
