Private room after section???

I need to have a c section this time-it's my dc3. I've comforted myself by saying I'll be able to plan better and have a def private rm. However chatting with someone today she told me I wouldn't be allowed a private room as I'll be high dependency.
I obviously can't change things and I have to have elcs but it's made me a tad unhappy. Any one have any experience of this?

I had a private room after ELCS but know others who didn't so I don't think there is a hard and fast rule really.

I had an ELCS with DS2 and am having another with DC3 in August, it was a really lovely experience and my recovery was fine, lots better than the traumatic assisted delivery with DS1. It is also very handy to be able to plan for the other DCs in advance. I hope yours is a nice experience too.

I had EMCS and not only was I put in a four bedded bay but I had no breakfast the following morning. I was told I had to go and collect it from the day room - I was still numb and had a catheter in. It was absolutely fucking awful.

I had an EMCS and I was in a 4 bedded room, and I was glad of it as when I had my previous DS I ended up in a single room because thats all that was available and it bored me rigid being alone. In the 4 bedded room I had other new Mums to talk to and it passed the time quicker. The staff were brilliant to.

You could request a single room if thats what you want but I guess it just depends on whether 1 is available or not.

I was high dependency because of PET each time and had to go into the ward next to the midwife station which is the noisiest and most annoying. Sorry.

I was promised a single room and then moved each time because they believed I might die if left unwatched (and apparently other patients do a fine job of pressing the bell if you have a seizure and die ).

Thanks for replies.
I was on the ward after my son-homebirth and transferred in for repairs. I was treated horribly by the other mums on ward as I was bfing. 2 of them snored and the other was on her mob phone all night!!
I'm seeing my consultant next week so will ask then.

I was given a private room after having ds by elcs, as he was in SCBU. I was being monitored because I had pains in my chest, one of my legs had swelled up and I couldn't stop being sick. The staff were amazing, checking on me regularly and ensuring that my buzzer was in easy reach.

I think they try and give you a private room for the first night if it's available. When I had DS I had a private room and was able to pay to keep it for the remainder of my stay (3 nights). When I had DD 3 years later things had changed a bit, I had a private room for the first night but I may not have, if someone else needed one more (e.g.Mum with baby in special care) then I would have been put straight on the ward, and there was certainly no chance of me having the room any longer. I was only in for 2 nights though so not the end of the world.

Hopefully, if you are on the ward it will be will other Mums who have had sections.

I think that midwives are under lots of pressure at the moment, so if you're not getting what you need speak up. In particular after your section ask for pain relief as soon as you can as it may take them some time to get to you.
Whether you have a private room or you are on a ward, you will have your gorgeous new baby with you. Good Luck and congratulations xx

There may be circumstances where you need to be kept on a ward but if everything goes smoothly you should be allowed to go into a private room. I'm going to have a ELCS this time after an EMCS last time, and am definitely paying for a private room (though if it's full, I'm out). I was on four bed bay last time and it was bloody horrible. If the MW's didn't bother to respond to my bell when I needed to get DS out of his cot as he was crying when I still had no feeling in my legs last time, how could it be any worse in my own little room???

At my hospital you have to go on ward for first night post cs, regardless as to whether it was elective. You can then pay for a private roon after that £130 a night!!

HWne I had my son 3 years ago the hosptial put woman who had had sections in 4 bedded bays,
I was moved to a private room (normal delivery but baby being monitored by scbu) to make way for a woman who had had a section.

A bit of an update I met my consultant today and I am allowed s private room but if somebody needs it more they'll turf me out... Sounds fair to me!

Our (shiny, new) unit has 4 x 4 bedded wards plus 12 private rooms. Anyone can have a private room if they're available with emergencies & scbu etc getting priority.

I think protocol here is to have one night on the 4 bed ward after a section but then if there's space you can be transferred to a private room the the remaining nights. For safety, I believe.

As far as I'm aware, paying for a private room is not an option. Which is good as I'd like one if I have a section but have no money currently!

Mmm that's the thing they're £70/night here, well that was 4 years ago with dd.. They didn't warn us and after a 3 night stay presented dh with a bill!!! Was a bit of a surprise. I still will pay given the chance I'm not a v sociable person in pain!!!

I had an emcs with first and was put in the 4 bedded room next to the nurses station. I think it makes it easier for them to go and check on everyone etc.

I was SO unbelievably jealous of the people with single rooms who managed to have their partners stay past chucking out time.

Same thing happened to me 5 years ago. They said I had to go in high dpendency ward- but in reality that meant absolutely no care whatsoever. It was a traumatic first night with one greasy midwife in clippy cloppy shoes walking up and down the corridor all night. No-one turned the lights off at bedtime and all us poor women were like rats in a lab. We were all post csection and could not move. My catheter bag was so full that it was on the floor with the tube trapped between the metal bedsides! It was like something out of a horror film. I buzzed for more pain relief (Morphine) and was quizzed by greasy midwife - "what sort of pain are you in dear" . I remember replying "the sort of pain when you have had your Belly cut open and a baby pulled out" .

At 2am they brought in a woman who had just had an emcs and she was in bits - wanting to tell the nurses what had happened - a debrief - but they were not interested. She was opposite me and I asked her how she was and gave her the 30 minutes she needed to talk about the trauma. Then they bought her baby but left the bassinet just out of her reach. Her baby started coughing and choking and she couldn't reach him so we all buzzed, but it was so awful that I managed to get up and stagger over to push the bassinet to her.

Terrible care. At 6am I told the new shift that they had better get me a private room (they had 5 empty!) or fetch the psych as I was on verge of a breakdown

The reason I had originally requested a private room was that I had previously lost a baby at birth and wanted to have privacy to manage my emotions and ensure that I would have peace.

I worked for Surestart at the time and when I retuned from maternity leave I bumped into the greasy midwife in the office. I had to run to the toilet and had my one and only panic attack.

Just make sure that high dependency means high quality care and not just an excuse to get you all in the same room.

Holy cow! Some of these hospitals you guys have given birth at sound awful :O

At our hospital in the north west private rooms are given first to people whose babies are in SCBU..what type of delivery you have makes no difference..think you can pay for a private room or at the time, ask for one if it's available.

I had a section with my second and was on a ward with 4 beds..it was really nice, chatting to the other mums passed the time..think i'd have gone mad being in a room on my own!

I was lucky in that i was up and about within 12 hours and pain free (i took everything they offered me :) ) ... the other mums and the midwives were all lovely

our brand new shiny hospital is 100pc private rooms.

DS born by emcs, hospital policy is for CS ladies to have a private room if one is available. Was put in 6 bedder to start with (had to wait in theatre for a bed to come free, DS was born in the middle of Sept - busy time). and moved to private room a couple of days later (we were in for quite a while).

It will depend on the hospital. After DW had a section she went into a ward of 6 beds (it was about 5am) so they could check on her easily. By late afternoon she was recovered sufficiently that they were happy for her to go into a private room as there was one available. There was a charge for it (about £120 a night I think) but we never received a bill.

I was on the PN ward for 3 nights after my EMCS .

But I had a private room for nights 2 & 3 after me planned CS . Much better recovery.

I paid for a private room. I noticed they were wheeling me in the direction of the general ward after my emcs with my babies in tow and asked for one.
I expect the people on the ward were glad we weren't put there - feeds every hour!

I was told I'd missed breakfast too - was attached to catheter. So over 24 hours since I'd eaten.

Been out of hospital for 4 days after 4 days in after an EMCS. Was high dependency, so on. 4 bed ward. Was a mix of awful and reassuring to have people around.

If you are high dependency, you will probably be on a ward.
