severe pain in early pregnancy

I got woken up at 2am last night by very severe pain down there, it was so painful it was very difficult to think about anything else and it lasted for about an hour. I'm 6 weeks into my pregnancy, I know this might have been a MC - I did put white knickers on in case there would be any blood, none so far.
Is there anything else this could've been? I've got a doctors appointment tomorrow anyway so will be talking about it then, am wondering whether I should buy another pregnancy test so I can see/make sure tomorrow morning it's going to come up positive.
Has anyone else ever had severe pain in early pregnancy and had no issues with MC?

Hi Dizzy, that sounds scary! if you are not having any pains now or bleeding then it is probably nothing.......could you have turned over and pulled something? this happens alot as your ligaments are weakened by the hormones?
A PG test wouldn't tell you anything as, you have PG "products" inside, indeed even when MC a test still shows up positive til the bleeding has all finished.

Hi Dizzy... Where actually is the pain?

I had (at around 4-6 weeks) the worst pains in my lower stomach, far worst than the "perios pains" i had heard about... they woke me up every 2 hours at night, i was nearly passing out from them, shaking and going dizzy they hurt that much... it still hurt in the day but no way as near as at night, no blood

I went to my docs (i didnt know i was pregnant) and he said do a test to see if i was preg, and if i was go straight to a&e incase it was etopic ...

To cut a long story short, i was placed under the early pregnancy unit, and went bck for blood tests every 2 days to check my hormones were doubling,t hen when it was high enough i had 3 internal scans. The 1st oe showed it was not etopic, and i had a cyst (which is quite common) on my ovary, i can not remember what this cyst is called, but it it to protect the developing egg, and the pain was it breaking away.

On my last scan (at 8 weeks) it showed at heartbeat and there was no cyst any more... and the pain had also stopped

Thankyou both, I'm very grateful for such speedy replies. The pain was in my lower abdomen/womb area - I was hoping at the time that maybe it was just extreme indigestion, but it seemed too low for that. It was like period pains but a hell of a lot worse (and I can have pretty damn painful ones to begin with). I don't think it could just have been from pulling something, it just felt far too painful.
Hopefully at most it will be a cyst like you had kri5ty, will probably call the doctor up today and see what they advise (tomorrow just seems too long away for something like this).

This could be an ectopic pregnancy so you need to get it checked out ASAP

DizzyKipper it does sound exactly like mine was, so i have my fingers crossed

But rather than the doc i suggest going to A&E today, incase it is etopic... my doc just told me to go there anyway

Definitely get checked, of course, but I had very painful cramps when I was about 5-7 weeks. They felt like period pains but much, much worse than I'd ever had before. I vividly remember lying on the floor of the disabled loo at work several times doubled up in agony! It would seem they were just growing/stretching pains, and they did go away after that time, and I'm now 35 weeks. Best of luck, hope all is ok.

The other good thing is at A&E they told me i was too early to be having pains from an ectopic, and that gave me hope... it was a long few weeks wait until the scans but the fact i was having my bloods taken every other day made me feel more at ease

Get yourself there straight away, as if it is ectpoic (which hopefully it wont be) it can be very dangerous for you xxx

echoing comments above - I was sick with the pain from dc1 from about 5-7 weeks, checked for ectopic, all fine and she's fast heading to 3! Good luck at EPU x

Hopefully it's not ectopic. Could it be a UTI infection?

I had this at 8 weeks and went to A&E as they were worried about ecoptic but it wasn't. The pains continued for a few days and they gave me co-codamol. Was fine after a few days and they told me it was a threatened miscarriage. I never had any bleeding and DS is now 18 months.

The 'cyst' referred to is a corpus luteum. It is the remains of a follicle on the side you ovulate from and it does protect the pregnancy by producing progesterone. I always have pain on the side on which it attaches. It's a normal and requisite part of pregnancy and some women do feel pain from where it attaches.

BUT you do need to go and make sure the pregnancy is located in the right place.

Please go to your doctor or EPU to be checked. It could be nothing (I really hope it is) or it could be ectopic or a cyst. Some cysts are harmless, some need urgent surgery. Your doc will be able to tell a lot from your temperature, BP, etc.

Thankyou for all the responses. I'm going to get checked out tomorrow and ask the doctor to start keeping track of hcg levels in the blood (best way of diagnosing ectopic from what I've read). I did have a phone consultation today but the doctor did not seem overly worried, he said to wait and see and that it was too early for me to have any ultrasounds (apparently only 5 weeks rather than 6). I really hope that it will be the growing/stretching pains some of you have described, but finding it hard to feel hopeful right now.

Hi again hun yes the hospital checked my hormone until it was high enough for a scan... but if the pains are still bad you should go to a&e regardless of what the gp says, they can check you out properly... where about do you live? X

Well I've just started to have some spotting, it's only light at the mo and I don't know whether it will carry on or not. Was getting some slightly painful cramps just before this happened, and still getting them now (haven't had them since the initial bout). Am wearing pale knickers for the night to to see what else may come out. Very down at the moment, feel certain I've just had a MC. I'm seeing the doctor tomorrow so will talk through my concerns, see what they can do, and probably take a pregnancy test at the end of the week - hopefully after hcg levels would have had time to clear out. Will go to a&e if the cramps become any more painful and/or prolonged.

DizzyKipper Im so sorry :( i have everything crossed for you, i know it is different for everyone, however my friend had a period whilst she was pregnant, so there is hope...

Thanks kr5ty. Pain and bleeding is still here so phoned in sick and about to catch a bus to a&e. Will update when I get back, hopefully with good news but not feeling very hopeful Sad

I really wouldn't go to a and e on your own Dizzy. It's a horrible situation, you may not get seen straight away unless you are severely bleading and will be sat upset in a waiting room getting pushed from pillar to post. A gp referal to EPU would be alot easier on you, and they are kinder there. It's such an awful thing to happen I really hate to think of you going on your own.

Just got back. Pregnancy test still showing faint line, blood test taken. Temp still up, cervix position closed. They think it's an early miscarriage, I have to go back Friday again for more blood tests so they can check the hcg levels are going down.
