Are you going to breastfeed on Heparin.

Breastfeeding didn't really work for me last time for different reasons and We ended up bottle feeding quite soon and I don't have any problem with it.
This time I am on Clexane and will be after the birth and I read in the leaflet that breastfeeding should be avoided whilst on it. I guess this means they don't have any confirmation that it is ok or not.
I am quite happy to bottle feed again but wondered what you other ladies on Clexane are planning on doing?
Also, if you breastfeed does that mean you would have to stay on Clexane rather than switch to Warfarin?

Hello wotty, I breastfed my DS and am planning on breastfeeding this one when it comes. I was told it was ok on clexane but not warfarin as it can't cross the placenta when pregnant or go in breast milk when feeding. However I saw that leaflet too but as you say it's just that they can't test it! My haematologist told me it was ok and it is now white routinely given to women so I guess if there was a problem they'd have found it by now?

It's such a pain to rake though isn't it?!

Yes I guess so. I guess if it's ok in pregnancy it must be ok in BF really! Not sure I want to spend months more on it though after the birth :(
It is a pain to take. Some times it really stings and sometimes it doesnt hurt at all - maybe where I inject.

I know, it's so hard to tell! I only have to take it 6 weeks post partum tho, do you have to take it longer? Such a pain (literally and metaphorically!) if you do.

Hiya, I'm on clexane too and been told that this doesn't cross the placenta but that warfarin does. I doubt that clexane would affect BF, BF is pushed so heavily that I think it unlikely they'd want you to take a medication that would impede or prevent this. Hate the clexane it hurts soooo much, seems they give it out a lot now as a precautionary measure though

I'm not sure mum how long as I had developped DVT after the birth of my DD and have had several superfical clots since. I have been tested for ANA antibodies too of which one test came back positive and another negative so I am going to see haemotologist again in a few weeks and see what they are going to do with me. My obst has put me on heparin in the meantime but my last Haemotologist said I would have to be on it after the birth to prevent another clot.

Clexane doesn't pass into breastmilk. You can breastfeed perfectly safely on it and the only reason it says in the pack insert that it should bs avoided in breastfeeding women is that it's impossible to trial the drug in this patient group. The dose for prevention of DVT is very very small anyway.
I BF on it without any problems. Good luck.

I was prescribed clexane after ds2 was born because my mobility was limited by a broken ankle.

Fine with breastfeeding.

But jeeeez, it stings sooooo much!

Ok thanks ladies, think I also just wanted an excuse to tell the midwives unless I didnt get on with breast again Grin
Good to know it seems to be safe though.
Mawbroon, its strange, sometimes mine really stings and sometimes it's not too bad at all.

Ok here's the bagofholly patented method for painfree clexane:

Get a lollyice
Sit down
Slide lolly under the bottom of your tum, the bit where if you have a spare tyre, or lean forward, your tum would touch your thighs (v few nerve endings)
Allow lolly to numb area
Pinch an inch of v cold flesh, jab in needle FAST
Pull out
Eat lolly.

Ah, I had to do mine in my thigh rather than bump. Maybe that's sorer, dunno.

I ended up with bruises all over my thigh, which is a vast area Shock

But maybe I was just rubbish at administering it!

My bruises were terrible when I first had it, but this time I only get tiny little ones. Maybe the dosage has something to do with it?

Sorry my phone half crashed and resent my last post! I do mine in my thighs too, looks v attractive at the swimming pool! I just hope everyone's attention is on my ever expanding belly rather than my dotty legs...!
