Video monitors

Hi All,
Was planning on buying a sound only baby monitor (BT150 seems to be the best reviewed?)
DH suggested a video monitor but I'm concerned that i'll be too distracted by it and constantly obsessively checking rather than just listening out for sounds.

I have a big cat who will be shut out of the nursery but it would be good to be able to check that he's not managed to sneak in but other than that I worry that I won't be able to get on with doing things when the baby is asleep.

Would be good to get thoughts from people who have a video monitor..

We didn't have a video monitor for the simple reason, when DC1 was born, you could only view the video from a fixed point whereas you could carry the sonic one around with you.

As for the cat, you can get a cheap cat net for the moses basket and the pushchair and you could always just get up and see where the cat is.

Don't forget too that the recommendations are that baby sleeps in your room for at least the first 6 months. There is some info about it here

jilted I don't understand that link. Are they saying that it's safer for your baby to be in a cot in your bedroom than it is for them to be in a nursery, or that it is safer for them to be in a cot than in your bed with you? Or both? Sorry for being a bit thick....

No you aren't being thick, I found the information very confusing when I was pregnant with DC1.

The safest places for your baby to sleep are either in your bed. This is provided you follow the guidelines. Your MW should be able to give you a copy or there is some information on co-sleeping here.

The other safe place for the baby to sleep is in the same room as you. As far as I know there hasn't been enough research to fully understand why this is so. However, many believe it is because hearing you breath helps to regulate the babies breathing. You will also respond more quickly if there is a problem with the baby.

I think video monitors are just a marketing gimmick to make money out of worrying first time parents.

Thats probably a good idea Pink. Ask her if she can give you the WHO guidelines on safe co-sleeping. You may not intend to co-sleep but when you are a bit sleep deprived and its the early hours of the morning you might put LO in bed with you. If you do its far safer if you know what the guidelines are.

And you could always ask her for some evidence based information on why having the baby in your room for the first 6 months is the safest.

We have a video monitor and it has been brilliant. It means I can check on him without having to go in and disturb him, as he's got older I can also see what he's up to, so I can see if he's chucked his bunny out of the cot, hence the crying, or if he's whimpering I can see if he's sat up and wide awake, so I would go in, or if he's still lying down, when I would leave him for a few mins and he will normally go back to sleep. It's also hilarious watching what he gets up to when he wakes up in the morning, playing with his bunny etc. DC2 is due in November and I'll be getting another one for then,

We have a video monior and it is the best baby thing we bought!
Can check up on him without going in and risking waking him.

I am a very anxious person so this reallyhelped calm me down as I could have a peek and see he was fine.

Like edwinbear said you can see why they are crying/ if they are still lying down etc.

We have bought another one so we can connect them both to just one monitor and see the new baby when it arrives.Our is portable so can go everyhere with you.

Thanks for the advice. I might start off with the BT150 and then we we move him / her into the nursery think about getting a video monitor...

You will probably be able to get one off ebay. We got our monitor for from ebay for less than half of the retail price and it looked like it had never been used. It has so far lasted 7 years.
