Smear test in pregnancy?

Hi, My Dr's wrote to me saying I am due a smear test.
I am 19 weeks pregnant now.
Should I go ahead and book it or wait until after baby has arrived?

Maybe I am just trying to think of excuses to get out of it! Hmm Last time me and the nurse had a battle with the thing because I kept clenching my muscles down there and she kept going 'just relax!' Blush

They wouldn't do my smear until at least 3 months after I gave birth

I'm no dr but I would check with your gp - personally, I would wait :) I would be worried about a possible risk of infection etc (I know it's highly unlikely but still - unless you have some worrying symptoms a pap smear can surely wait a few months?)

i was due for smear too but GP said they won't do it until after my baby is born now. She said it is totally inaccurate even if it is safe to do, so no point. You're off the hook for a while. Wink

lol i had one of those, they will delay it till three months after birth.

MelodyMeringue · 26/05/2011 00:17

Had this discussion with the practice nurse the other week. They won't do it while you're pregnant and you won't them anywhere near you for quite a while after giving birth. Made me chuckle...

Yep, I got a reminder too, at 14 weeks, and just called to tell them I was pregnant. They'll schedule a reminder for 3 months after your EDD.

Thankyou all, I will check but maybe it is best to wait (phew!Grin) hate those things! No strange symptoms of anything down there so hopefully all is well anyway!

I can understand waiting 3 months though (had an epistiotomy sp? last time and I guess thats pretty common and needs time to heal.)

All in all YIPEEEEE!!!!!!

so glad I saw this thread ladies... I know i'm due a smear this month (altho no letter yet thinking about it....guess it'll arrive soon) and midwife told me I wouldnt be able to have it until at least 2 months after babe arrives. I was worrying about the fact that the smear would be so late after the date which I was meant to have it, but appears that there are lots of us in the same boat... so i'm feeling abit happier about it now :)

Rootatoot · 26/05/2011 14:14

I know what you mean icravecheese. I was waiting for my letter to arrive for my smear which was due in January, then found out JUST before xmas that I was pregnant. I'll be over a year late having my smear when I get round to having it. So that means it'll be 4 years since my last one which seems a long time but nothing I can do about it!

KatieWatie · 26/05/2011 15:48

I only signed up with my docs in December and got a letter straight away about it. However by the time I got round to taking any notice of it I was already pregnant, and they told me I'd have to wait til 3 months post-natal because it can give inaccurate results while pregnant.

So we're off the hook for a bit Blush

theonlyhb2 · 26/05/2011 17:10

they keep reminding me too - you know I am pregnant and cant have one so stop bloody reminding me!!!

Rootatoot · 26/05/2011 20:59

theonlyhb....yep, me too! Had a couple of letters. Duh!

Borisneedsahaircut · 26/05/2011 21:32

They probably don't bother looking at your notes to see if you are pregnant or not though do they? I have been a couple of times to my Dr and had to remind them of important issues they hadn't read in my notes as well as tell one Dr that I couldn't take the medication she was precribing me because I was on blood thinners!
