I had GBS and got antibiotics in labour - DS is fine. I would like to say that if anyone wants to test themselves, they can buy a kit for £30 at TDL (the doctor's laboratory) and take the results to the midwife. This is what I did.

Thank you bigkids, its nice to know that everything was fine, x

I was tested pos in pregnancy after having a swab for something else, luckily i found out, had the antibiotics and everything was fine.

Before being tested i hadnt heard of this before which i think is terrible! No awareness of GBS is around and for such little cost such a huge difference can be made. I wasnt aware of it when i had my DD 5 years ago so either didnt have it then or luckily got away with it, some people arent so lucky :-(

Spoke to my midwife and consultant about this as my waters broke before contractions in first pregnancy, same things happened for my mother in all 4 pregnancies.

Hospital tests 60% effective and online purchased test 80% effective according to high risk pregnancy consultant obstetrician I see - still means one in five tests are wrong. Not a reason not to get one but they are not 100%.

bigkidsmademe · 24/05/2011 11:50

Yes indeed, and it is possible to be positive at 37 weeks then clear it yourself, or test negative then pick it up, this is why the NHS don't routinely test.

I tested positive in second trimester after a swab for something else. due to a VERY speedy labour (nearly gave birth in the taxi!) I never got the antibiotics. However my ds had them for 48 hours and came back all clear.
Paediatrician was fab. Said the chances of him been infected were slim but better to be safe than sorry!

Thank you, it is nice to hear good outcomes, x

I was tested with both PG, near the end too - negative. When waters went both times at 36+ weeks - positive.

Had AB and all was fine.

NormanTebbit · 26/05/2011 15:03

Dd1 was born with a GBS infection - meningitis. Two weeks in special care, IV antibiotics, daily heel prick tests etc

Fortunately she is a fine and healthy 7 year old. Others aren't so lucky.

Tested negative but DS was born with an infection, after 7 days on AB he was fine. He's now a bouncy 16 months old.

I always wondered if I had a false negative? Hmm

Icoulddoitbetter · 26/05/2011 20:27

I found out 10 DAYS AFTER GIVING BIRTH that I had tested positive for GBS. I was called at home by a midwife who told me, and when I said I'd already had DS she said "oh, is he ok?" !!!!!!!!!!! Luckily I had abx i labour due to my waters breaking and it being slow, but the fact that they tested and still missed it freaked me out, it's shocking.

I'm planning a ELCS this time, does anyone know if I still need to test myself before I have the op?

CoffeeIsMyFriend · 26/05/2011 20:30

I had this when pregnant with DS, got antibiotics and I was fine, DS was not and we ended up in hospital for almost 2 weeks. DS now fine.

Tested during pregnancy with DD - got IV antibiotics during labour and DD was fine.

Maternelle · 26/05/2011 20:35

I would love to know if this apply to ELCS too.
