Hey girls,

I've just been for my 20 week scan and have been told that I have a huge cyst on my left ovary. I can't stop crying as I'm so frightened that it's going to burst and hurt my baby, who, otherwise, is perfect.

Have any of you experienced this and what happened?

I'm so frightened.

Hi there Gemsy - sorry to hear you are so upset. I personally haven't had this experience but there was a thread the other day where one of the posters had a cyst burst which was obviously worrying as there was a bleed but baby was absolutely fine. You should speak to your midwife to check if there are any risks and what happens next. I think it's pretty common. xx

I had one on my right ovary and was scanned again at around 30 weeks and it had burst without causing any problems. They told me this was likely to happen but that if it didn't they would look to remove it after the birth. Don't panic, it is apparently very common.

Thank girls. I've just looked in my notes and it's 12cmx14cm which is huge, and I'm still scared. It's practically the size of the baby and now I feel like a ticking time bomb xx

Phone your GP and/or MW tomorrow and get an appointment asap. You need information because you can't just fret like this. I'm sure they'll keep close eye on you with regular scans but you need to find out what might happen. Try and get some sleep, and know that you can get some answers tomorrow. I'm sure the facts won't be half as bad as what is going through your head. Let us know how you get on. x

Thanks Rootatoot. I actually spoke to my GP earlier and she said it was nothing to worry about and won't cause a miscarriage. She said it will probably shrink on its own and may have been there before I was pregnant. And she said if it does burst, it will hurt but that is all, as the ovary is so far away from mu uterus now.

I think I'm just getting myself into such a tizz because it was a shock when she told us. I am also having another scan next Tuesday and an appointment with the consultant, so in my head I think it can't be that bad or they would have had a more thorough look today xxx

There you go! You'll be fine, it's just been a nasty shock. Go have soak in bath, relax and get early night. Won't seem so bad tomorrow. As you said, baby is perfect which is fantastic news from your scan and another one next week to make sure you're doing ok....sounds like you're in good hands to me :) x
