Do i NEED a maternity swimsuit?

I'm tempted just to buy a big size of a regular one, since my boobs have expanded at the same rate as my belly!
I'm 29 weeks now, and If I might need a maternity one in a few weeks anyway I might aswell get one now, but they're so dear!

Has anyone else managed to squeeze into there regular one? I'm doing lane swimming rather than just aquanaetal stuff!

I got a reasonable one from next think it was £15.
I couldn't have got away with a normal one in a bigger size as my bust is very small and doesn't grow in pregnancy so my bust will have been exposed.

This is the one I got, have had it for 2 pregnancies now and is just fine for lane swimming for me.

legallyblond · 17/05/2011 11:49

No!!! Just wear a cheapo bikini (you know, one from primark or h&m or something) and get a bigger sized top! I wore a cheap bikini all summer for proper (lane swimming in the pool) swimming and the beach. It cost me a total of £6.

LoveBeingAbleToNamechange · 17/05/2011 11:50

I just got a lovely fitting one from asda and only £12.

ILoveDrKarl · 17/05/2011 11:51

I wore my normal Speedo size 10 right up til about 30 weeks with all 3 pregnancies (and the last one was twins). After that I got a 2-piece tankini type thing which was sold separately so that I could get size 14 top and size 10 bottoms. I got one set in NEXT and one in John Lewis. Figleaves online might be worth a look too - esp in their clearance section as they tend to sell things as separates rather than sets so you can get different sizes like I did if you need to.

mosschops30 · 17/05/2011 11:52

Nope i bought a cheap nasty tankini from asda for £5. It grew with me, and i grew A LOT (4 stone)

Bramshott · 17/05/2011 11:53

Nope, not at all. I just wore an old swimsuit I didn't mind stretching.

spatchcock · 17/05/2011 12:09

I bought the one nunnie suggested - it's been fantastic.

marie14 · 17/05/2011 12:18

Didn't realise they were that reasonable in next, have been looking at mothercare etc that are 30 odd quid!!

I would get a bikini but my stretchmarks are horrendous!

Am going to dig out my old one and see what that looks like, if not get a next one!

Thanks :)

I need a maternity one - boobs havent grown at the same rate as the belly! Got in mothercare for £15 - its not the prettiest but fine for swimming pool - if I was going away I'd want a nicer one I think.

camdancer · 17/05/2011 13:06

I could have coped with a normal one until about 32ish weeks but then my belly exploded and the maternity one is now necessary. I got a mothercare one in the sale for about £15 and it has lasted 2 pregnancies. It is a mess now - no elastic left in the side panels, but I'm 37 weeks so there is no way I'm going to get another one for probably less than 3 weeks!

MainlyMaynie · 17/05/2011 14:19

I could have coped with a normal one until about 30 weeks, but now I'm so glad I have the maternity one. My bump is big and would not have fitted into a normal one and I really don't have a bikini figure! I've got a Next one and it's fine.

theonlyhb2 · 17/05/2011 17:56

get a bikini! i am normally a 12, and a size 18 swimming costume was too tight for me at 24 weeks! at least with a bikini it doesnt matter how big yr bump gets and you can keep for after :)

whatsoever · 17/05/2011 17:58

I've just got an M&S normal one that appears to have a lot of 'give' in it. I wore a tankini before but the top was rolling right up and making me feel a bit exposed. I'll get a maternity one later if I absolutely have to.

smartyparts · 17/05/2011 17:59

I just wore regular swim suit (which was a stretchy one) and bought a bikini in a 14 (normally 10 or 12) which accommodated bigger boobs

Jill72 · 17/05/2011 18:03

has anyone resorted to a t-shirt in the pool and did the staff let you ??

dazedandconfused · 17/05/2011 18:11

I wasn't sure whether to cough up for a maternity suit but in the end got one from Mothercare and have used it loads. My bump is big (now 37 weeks) and there's no way in hell I would bare my belly so having swathes of gathered fabric has kept me very happy. You could get a secondhand one on ebay.

nannyl · 17/05/2011 18:13

i got a never worn one from ebay for £2

Im 23 weeks now and have needed it since 17 weeks

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 17/05/2011 18:17

Jill I did bikini bottoms and vest (rather than T-shirt) nobody complained actually I think nobody noticed.

PrincessScrumpy · 17/05/2011 18:35

I wore a bikini up until about 32w but my boobs grew so big the top didn't fit so I bought a tankini. I've worn it with 2nd pg and now have stretchmarks so would not do a bikini! I have to say, I love it and it was a good buy. I swam 2 times a week until the night before dd was born.

Whatevertheweather · 17/05/2011 20:52

I've been having a look at some on Matalan's website. Very reasonable prices.

lilly13 · 18/05/2011 17:24

hi, i am over 40 weeks and still squeezing into my zoggs size 10, having gained about 35 pounds.. some swimsuits are amazingly stretchy... don't buy a new one yet...

magicman · 24/03/2012 13:58

I recently got one from swimwear for women over 40. The one which I use regularly was not fitting me.

Ponyclubmum · 24/03/2012 14:18

My size 10 swimsuit was not at all stretchy enough for me. I've bought a Mothercare tankini one that wasn't too expensive and it's great. The best part is I can have a wee just before getting in the pool and again straight after, without taking the whole thing off!

KatAndKit · 24/03/2012 16:03

My regular one would have been utterly useless past about 26 weeks. I got one for about 12 pounds from Matalan (on the website as they don't have maternity in my shop) and it is great although the sizing is a bit generous and I could have gone one smaller.
