Stretch marks: did you get them and from what week did you notice?

As the subject says, would like to know how many people out there got stretch marks and from what week did they first appear?

I'm 34 weeks and midwife said if I was going to get them, I would have had them by now... but both my mother and sister got them and also I had some stretch marks on my hip when I went through a teenage growth spurt - therefore I'm expecting a few.

So curious to hear what others have experienced.

My mother had 7 children and no stretch marks.. but we were all small babies, born in the 50s and 60s (I was '72) and my mum smoked. So. I wasn't sure what to expect. I split like a melon with stretch marks everywhere during my 7th month of pregnancy and produced the biggest baby in our family or my partner's family, ever. You sure don't know what is going to happen in this pregnancy lark, do you?

Rosemallow · 17/05/2011 19:42

I smugly reached 37 weeks with none but they appeared overnight and DD was born at 37 + 6. Grrrr.
This time DS was head down for ages and I got some quite deep ones right down under my pant line but no others.
Instead, I have ended up with a crinkly belly button!
(both mine were under 7lbs so goodness knows what would've happened had I had bigguns!)

BatFlattery · 17/05/2011 20:39

Mine made their appearance around 36 weeks if memory serves, only a few and thought myself lucky. But then got loads more whilst in labour. DH said that during the stronger contractions when I was pushing he could actually see the stretch marks appearing Shock

I am prone to stretch marks anyway so didn't bother too much with creams etc... - I think it is solely dependent on your skin type, so no point in trying to stop them unfortunately. They fade really quickly though - DS is 4 months old and they're already starting to go silvery.

None until 39 weeks, and now my bump is covered in them! (at 40 + 1). Also have a few underneath my boobs. My mum says she didn't have any with me until she went overdue, and then loads appeared at once, so it seems to run in our family.

DuelingFanjo · 17/05/2011 21:06

none until very late, about 36 weeks. Not too bad but definitely there at the bottom of my bump.

UtterlyMonkey · 17/05/2011 21:23

I've been lathering with bio oil religiously as I am predicting some serious sm -already hv some from weight loss/gain over the years...
Does anyone know if yoga helps??? Hmm

TransatlanticCityGirl · 17/05/2011 22:26

not sure how yoga would help, UtterlyMonkey? I've always thought it was down to genetics, skin type, diet, and how quickly the skin stretches.

I didn't get any on my first dd. Was convinced I would as have old stretch marks on my hips and inner thighs from my childhood years.

I'm pregnant with no. 2 now and not going to get any false hopes up. I'll keep moisturising anyway.

cameli · 18/05/2011 07:51

I had my baby last week at 37+5 & I didn't get any stretchmarks :) The only thing I used was an oil I was bought my by oh in the shower & occasionally the moisturiser.

I have a few from my first pregnancy 15 years ago.

rachyaimeelou · 18/05/2011 08:18

didnt really get them with dd, well i did but they werent noticable were as with ds iv got them up my inner thighs and up the backs of my legs, horrible, i only noticed them at about 30 weeks pregnant, using my cream religiously, iv got a wedding 4 weeks after baby is born so i need them gone other wise no dress for me!!!

minibmw2010 · 18/05/2011 10:26

I'm 37+2 and don't have any yet, I've been covering myself in BioOil for a couple of years and I wonder if that has helped. I was at hospital yesterday being monitored (after a failed ECV) and the midwife even commented on how smooth my skin was so I'm praying that stays that way.

pearl297 · 18/05/2011 10:26

Im 35 weeks and have just started getting them on my hips, bum & boobs, but non on my bump what so ever yet. Don't know whether this has got anything to do with it but i have been slathering bio oil stupidly just on my bump for the past few months.

I've always thought that if your going to get stretchmarks you will get them regardless of what you do on but it just seems strange that they have appeared everywhere bar where i've been slathering it. Unless of course they appear there last! Anyway im edging my bets and slapping the stuff everywhere now. Its expensive and i go to bed like a human oil slick but anythings worth a try i suppose.

KatieWatie · 18/05/2011 11:10

Anyone know how long they take to fade and if they ever go completely?

I'm 20wks, bio-oiling like mad (probably pointlessly), but expecting to get them as I got loads as a teenager when I grew rapidly.

ALTHOUGH I've read somewhere that if you're a slightly or much older mum you're less likely to get them, and as I'm 33 I might be ok?

RitaMorgan · 18/05/2011 12:55

Mine have gone now, ds is 9 months.

thyfe198 · 30/04/2015 10:50

Probably 11 weeks, I've got them on my hip, thighs and mum since. But they are starting to worsen. Scaring the life outta me!!! Grhhhhhhh

heatherxo · 30/04/2015 12:20

I'm 29 weeks and lower half of bump is covered! I have got such a huge bump though. First noticed them around 23 weeks and every week they get worse

thechinaclogs · 30/04/2015 12:25

Oh no! I'm also 34 weeks and thought I had escaped too, until I read all the stories on this thread! Boo! I might go mad with the moisturiser for the next few weeks, though I'm not convinced creams really make any difference. Boo again!

MrsMillions · 30/04/2015 17:09

First time around my tummy escaped but did get them on my boobs during the breastfeeding months. They've disappeared since. 19 weeks and no sign of anything yet this time.

VenusVanDamme · 30/04/2015 17:15

Didn't get any but DS was small and born at 35 weeks so don't know if that made a difference - not that I'd recommend that as a solution.

lexyloub · 30/04/2015 17:57

I only got them at 38/39 weeks Angry

anyagujraal · 01/05/2015 08:59

I am 13 weeks pregnant. My friends has suggested me to use cocoa butter in order to prevent stretch marks. So, from the stage of my pregnancy confirmation I started massaging my belly with the cocoa butter, daily one time. Hoping I will not get any stretch marks. Lets see.

Christelle2207 · 01/05/2015 09:17

None with dc 1 but I never got that big and was religious with the bio-oil. Currently am 38w with dc 2 and am bracing myself as I am expanding at quite an alarming rate- way bigger than last time.

chloechloe · 01/05/2015 11:38

I didn't get any before or after birth although I only gained 8kg and had a small bump. I already had other stretch marks though on my boobs and thighs so am susceptible to them. I religiously used Weleda oil every evening before the birth ( now I don't have time). Not sure if that made a difference or not, but glad I did it.

nippey · 01/05/2015 11:57

Mine appeared last week at 31 weeks, and seem to multiplying at an alarming rate!

Metalhead · 01/05/2015 12:06

I also got some on my hips during a teenage growth spurt, but none during my first pregnancy, so you might be lucky!
