Severe but short-lived stomach pains......

Hoping someone can reassure me about the pains I had this morning. Not even sure if this is possible but at 12 weeks it really felt like the baby was pressing on a nerve or something..........I had really sharp, low down stomach pains (almost like a burning feeling) that woke me up and then went on for about 40 mins.

In the end we were just about to head over the A&E to get it checke out, I was in so much pain. The pain only dropped off once I had been sick and emptied my body of everything possible (if you know what I mean ).....now I am left feeling really sore but the pain is nowhere near what it was.

Anyone else had something similar? Is it possible someone/something was pressing on a nerve and when I went to the loo, the pressure lifted??

Feel stupid going to A&E now the pain has passed but it is worrying me....

It sounds like ligaments stretching .. which can get really painful in 2nd and subsequent preganancies and do feel fairly crampy

But I would call midwife when it gets to that time if I were you or if particularly worried call NHS direct 0845 46 47

runtus · 10/11/2005 07:26

Thanks Twiglett, it just didn't feel like any stretching I have had up till now..........was sharper and much more sore than the achy pains I have had so far. Guess they can come in all forms though and I just hadn't had those ones before.

It has dropped off now so I am a bit less panicky but blimey it hurt at the time.....only felt better once I'd gone to the loo.

I had something that sounds similar to this several times in the night in the first half of my pregnancy. I had to pace the room and it did make me feel sick as it was so intense. I never got an explanation as to what it was. I would certainly at least call the mw to discuss it.

It did stop after a couple of weeks if I recall. It seemed to be triggered as I got in or out of bed in the night, so maybe it is ligaments?

If its any compensation I had completely forgotten about it until I read your post .

runtus · 10/11/2005 07:36

Thanks Mandymac, made me feel a bit better reading you had something similar...........it has totally gone off now so fingers crossed it was just the ligaments playing up. I guess as I've never been pg before, there are going to be loads of things I can't explain and panic me.

As I say, it died right off as soon as I had been to the loo and then been sick so I'll leave it for now. If it comes back I'll ring the MW but I'll leave it for now.

Thanks for your help and advice girls

Dare I say - could it "just" have been a normal stomach bug?

mandymac · 10/11/2005 08:28

In my case no, as it was infrequent, intense for up to an hour and then I felt absolutely fine for days. Certainly worth considering though. I guess that when you are pg your first reaction with every ache & pain is that it is related.

runtus · 10/11/2005 08:43

If it was a bug, it was the shortest one I have ever had! It was def toilet related though I think, I woke up feeling like I was desperate for a wee but when I went the feeling remained.

Went downstairs and it got much stronger and really started to hurt. Tried sitting down and it was worse (like a trapped nerve by this time), getting stronger all the time.

Decided to go to A&E as I didn't know what to do but then suddenly thought 'I'm going to be sick' so rushed to loo. By the time I got there the urge to be sick was takenover by the urge for a poo (sorry!), instantly felt better but by then I was so hot and horrible I threw up too.

All feelings pretty much gone now but scared me a bit I have to admit...............feel daft ringing the MD now though as all the pains/symptoms have gone and I feel fine now.

I would have a chat with your midwife or GP, just to put your mind at rest. Could be a bug, could be your body playing up.... best to get these things checked out.

JJane01 · 10/11/2005 20:36

And don't forget to let us know how you got on!

LIZS · 10/11/2005 20:56

Constipation or Irritable Bowel ? Baby could be pressing on it and causing spasms. I was prescribed a powder to help my "regularity" towards the end of pregnancy. Drink plenty too.

MrsEvs · 10/11/2005 21:03

I had the exact same thing last night! I'm at 19 weeks and it really gave me a fright. I was pretty much limping with the pain and could only lie on one side. This is baby number 2 for me and I do remember sharp pains now and then with dd but not this bad.
Mine also passed off after I did a poo . Think there isn't much room for everything in that region with expanding baby and it can sometimes happen. I feel absolutely fine now, but it did ache for a while afterwards.

By all means speak to the MW/MD if it will put your mind at rest. No need to feel silly, that's what they are there for and I'm certain they get calls for far more frivolous reasons than yours which was genuine pains - always frightening when you are pg.

runtus · 11/11/2005 09:45

Didn't call MW in the end becuase by the time she was around the pains had been totally gone 5 hours, so it seemed a bit daft.

I'm convinced it was something pressing in the bowel now so not panicing any more but blimey it gave me a shock.

All back to normal now, just much more aware of keeping my bowels clear so it can't happen again. Who would have thought I would ever write that on the internet?!

Runtus, is your pain high up or low down? Also is it left or right sided?

runtus · 14/11/2005 10:14

Hello, pain has totally gone now but it was low down and on the left side at the time. Does it make a diff?

Sounds like a stomach bug to me, I've had a few this pregnancy where you have bad stomach cramps then have to go to the loo half an hour later and empty everything out (sorry if TMI). Stomach bugs can be really shortlived like you just have to purge your system. I always am relieved when it's just a bug and not something more serious.

weebernie · 17/11/2005 18:18

Hi Runtus, I was asking about where the pain was because I experienced sudden severe pain when I was pregnant with DS3. When he was about 3 weeks old the pain returned but it was high up on the right hand side and I was sick and had to go to the loo which relieved the pain too. After 5 weeks of pain every other day I had to go into hospital where it was discovered that as well as carrying around a baby, I had been home to loads of little gallstones. I had my gallbladder removed 8 weeks after that. The hospital staff had said there seemed to be an increase in gallstones during pregnancy and due to the fact that I was only 26 at the time, this was quite unusual. It seems though that your pain is in a totally different location and sounds like a tummy bug.I hope the rest of your pregnancy is pain free and I wish you all the best for your new baby.

runtus · 18/11/2005 12:44

Thanks for the info, I think I am in the clear now really........no re-appearance of the pain at all thank god.

Put it down to 'just one of those things' in pregnancy!

rantus - glad thing are settled again - i've noticed if I don't ahem poop for a day or two I get realy bad pains (terrible wind) at first it was worrying but know what it is now. (it gets so bad that u're kinda stuck to the bed and can't move) fingers crossed it was just wind for u as well. (am now more concious of going every day) alos it's eased off now but between 12-20 weeks it was terrible esp from 16.

runtus · 21/11/2005 14:38

I knw what you mean Munz, I make sure i go everyday now whether I really feel the need or now...............at keast that way, if I do ever get pains again, I can rule that out as a cause.

Seems to do the trick!
