A clicking noise comes from my belly every now and again

Hi - has anyone else ever heard their pregnant belly make a clicking noise? It happens every now and again to me. It's definitely coming from my belly and it is definitely a clicking sound.

I mentioned it to the midwife who had no idea what I was talking about. I googled it and there seems to be other women who have experienced it and, from what I read, it all seems to be a relatively benign little quirk. Does anyone else have any experience of this?

This question regularly pops up on MN. There is never an answer for it, but it seems to be pretty common.

Yep, I had this with DD. Her shoulders seemed to click after she was born and went to GP about it, but they couldn't find anything wrong and haven't noticed it since she was a few weeks old.

I am now 39+4 and have had this from about 26 weeks. Have mentioned it to midwife and consultant and neither seemed concerned. They couldnt tell me what the sound was but said the baby would be checked for clicky hip when he/she is born (but think this is routine anyway).

The consultant tried to say it was my hips clicking but when I told her it was only when the baby was making strong movements and she actually heard the sound herself she said it could possibly be caused by a hormone that it released into a womans body to help her muscles relax to allow the growth needed to accommodate the growing baby being passed to the baby.
Will let you know when baby is born (hopefully very soon) if there was any explanation for it..

Sounds like the baby has hiccups.

Dynababy · 15/05/2011 13:20

I've had this and was quite freaked out - did similar googling and can't find definitive answer. Defo not hiccups they are quite different. Wish it was clearer what it was!

ButterflySally · 15/05/2011 15:43

I'm pretty sure it's not hiccoughs - my baby has been getting the hiccoughs and I can recognise them quite easily as they're quite rhythmic and I feel a tapping sensation near my left hip (near his head). The clicking thing comes out of the blue, it usually happens when the baby moves, it tends to be a one-off thing (i.e. once a day), and comes from near where his legs are.

Icanonlytry and trixymalixy, I wonder if it is baby's joints, given I'm hearing it comes from where his legs are when he moves. Icanonlytry, I'd be interested to hear if any explanation is revealed for you soon...good luck, hope it all goes well!

Even though it's something that doesn't seem to be hugely concerning, I'm still surprised the medical profession have no clear idea of what it is!

I had this with ds1.
No one knew what I was talking about and the midwives looked at me as though I'd lost the plot and yes, google didn't come up with anything other than other women concerned by it..
It definitely wasn't hiccups and was a distnict clicky noise.
Ds1 is fine. No clicky hip or anything so don't worry about it.

My bump has started clicking in the past week (37+4). It doesn't seem to come from deep enough inside to be baby but who knows.

bumble34 · 15/05/2011 20:12

i sneezed when driving the other day and the seat belt/ tight trousers pushed quite hard into my bump i definitely heard a clicking noise which was definitely the baby right where his hands and arms are Not so worried now i know other peoples babies click but i will be checking him over very carefully

MrsNoggin · 15/05/2011 22:02

I had this with DD1. I have clicky joints and she does too, I'm guessing that's all it was. As has been mentioned, we get all this joint-loosening going on, baby must get some of it too. I'm noticing a lot more clicking in this pregnancy. Several times a day, in fact!

My midwife suggested it might be where baby is sucking his/ her thumb and twitches and it gets pulled out a some force, making the sound. I don't know though, sometimes it could be, but sometimes it too clicky, rather than poppy, IYSWIM.

Sparklies · 16/05/2011 01:14

I have had it with all three of mine. I also have bad SPD and a fair old amount of clicking myself, so perhaps there is a connection. I've heard their joints click once they're out (nothing wrong with any of them I should add) and it sounds exactly the same so I'm guessing that's all it is!

I love the little clicks - reminds me there's a real person with a human body in there, crazy I know!

Joannezipan · 16/05/2011 09:29

Maybe you all have little jaz dancers in there? :o They are practicing for all the finger clicking they have to do when they grow up!

Amii1999 · 08/06/2024 21:59

I've had this in all 3 of my pregnancies. From what I've been told it's the baby moving the amniotic fluid. Basically the the waters crashing against your uterus wall causing a click sound.

Hope this helps!

OppositeOfBlooming · 08/06/2024 22:47

OP, is the clicking still happening? Maybe from the depths of your teenager's bedroom?
